Referred pain: You most likely have a viral or bacterial infection of either the base of the tongue, tonsil or pharynx. The pain in the ear is likely referred to the side of the face where the ear is located. If your hearing has not changed, the pain is referred to the side of the face (ear) because the sensory nerve that innervates the back of the throat also innervates the front of the ear canal.
