Went bowling and after a game and throwing the ball a weird way I felt a sharp pain in knee now every time I bend down I get a sharp pain any Ideas?

Knee strain: The body positions and leg motions in bowling put a slightly different stress on the knee joint then does walking. You may have strained the knee muscles, ligaments, or cartilage. Try to rest for a week, tryAlleve if you can tolerate it. Swelling of the knee joint may indicate a more significant level of injury. If it pops or locks, you should see your doctor. ...Read more

Knee pain: under and below the knee cap-when I stretch it there is sharp pain. I've been icing it, but doesn't help. Hurting for more than a week.

Varies: There are several possibilities including tendinitis of the patellar tendon at its orgin on the patella or chondromalacia on the under surface of the patella. You would probably do well to avoid jumping activities and activities that involve a lot of knee flexion, and if it does not get better I would consider being seen. ...Read more

Went to ortho dr about my knee pain. Sharp pain and locking up all time. All dr wants to do is give pain meds. What can I do for it. I'm tired of meds.

Good for you!!: Sometimes a PT is better for this than an ortho Dr. Especially after they determine no surgery is needed. So seek a good PT referral - ask at a Dr, a hospital, a nursing home, a gym, a pharmacy. You'll find they can really help! ...Read more

L5-S1 microdiscectomy Fri for left leg sciatic pain. Calf/foot pain relief w/some thigh/behind knee pain. Pain less AM but sharp pain down left leg into foot w/pain level of 9.5 & hurts sitting/lying.

Microdiskectomy: Give it some time; sometimes simply moving the roots around can upset the lumbar plexus and give you intermittent (even quite severe) pain, although it resolves within a week or two. Getting to the disk requires mobilization of the roots and inflammatory changes from that- or the disk herniation- itself can give this pain. As long as bowel and bladder OK, hopefully this will resolve also. Best! ...Read more

Was weeding & kneeling for 15 minutes. When I stood up, can't bear weight on left knee w/out severe front knee pain. Doesn't hurt when sitting. Tips?

Conservative care: Could be an injury to the soft tissue structures within the knee, possibly the meniscus. I would treat with conservative care: rest, ice, and perhaps Aleve (naproxen) or similar product. Hopefully it will resolve in short order. ...Read more

I am 42, no history of knee injury. Recently I get a burning sensation just beneath my knee cap when kneeling. No knee pain otherwise. Any ideas?

Early wear and tear: Pain coud be due to irritated/early wear of the patella cartilage or the surface cartilage of the thigh bone that rubs against the patella (try knee sleeve with a cutout for knee cap). Other causes could include patellar tendonitis (try knee strap) or a plica and osgood schlatters. For starters avoid kneeling, stairs, knee extension machines, deep squats, lunges etc. Try therapy, ice, advil/alleve. ...Read more

Chondromalacia: Very likely this represents roughened/damaged cartilage behind the kneecap termed patellar chondromalacia. 1st line treatment can include quadriceps, gluteal and hamstring strengthening; it band stretching and a knee brace that stabilizes the kneecap. I fell at work, hard on my left knee. I have sharp pain when kneeling or even when I touch my knee cap. What happened?

Need X-ray: If you haven't done so already, you need to be examined and have an x-ray. It is possible that you have fractured/broken your knee cap which sometimes requires surgery or at least a brace or cast. If not, then most likely you have sustained a contusion or bone bruise which should improve with time. Other possibilities exist as well & are best determined by an orthopedic evaluation. ...Read more
