Cardiac shunt: A patent formen ovale/pfo is a connection between the two upper heart chambers, where a shunt (flow) exists. Depending on how much flow (how big the hole), you might have symptoms, like fatique. Okay to ask your doc to show you pictures of your heart, and tell you how big the shunt is. Likey muscular: If the pain lasts less than 5 minutes at a time and/or you can make it worse or better by moving upper chest or arms then it is likely muscular in origin or even a pinched nerve. Tylenol or ibuprofen for a short time period of less than a week should be enough. Longer than that should be looked at by your doctor.
