Is there anyway to retrain your breathing? If your lungs are used to chronic hyperventilation is there anyway to reverse this?

Not really: Hyperventilation is either a physiological response to co2 or o2 levels in your blood sensed by the chemoreceptors in your brain or from an anxiety provoking mechanism (panic attack). So either you retain co2 due to copd/emphysema or you have high levels of Adrenalin from anxiety that stimulate hyperventilation. If the hyperventilation is from the latter you may try relaxation techniques. ...Read more

What is the cure for chronic hyperventilation syndrome? My lungs are used to breathing much larger volumes through the chest and i can't stop it.

Treat cause: We breath different amounts during different times. Just like blood pressure and heart rate, body responds to what it needs. If you breath larger volumes, generally there are less breaths per minute. Hyperventilation without this can be due to a metabolic problem that keeps your body breathing excessively. See your doctor or more specifically a pulmonary specialist if needed. ...Read more
