Cat scan was clear but an ultrasound showed a shadow on liver and stomach. Should I be worried? Blood work was fine.

A "shadow" on: ultrasound is not a specific finding and could mean almost anything. It may be normal, particularly if the CT showed no abnormality. What is the specific abnormality mentioned in the US report, if any? ...Read more

Liver (Definition)

This organ plays a major role in metabolism and has a number of functions in the body, including glycogen storage, decomposition of red blood cells, plasma protein synthesis, hormone production, and detoxification. It lies below the diaphragm in the abdominal-pelvic region of the abdomen. It produces bile, an alkaline compound which aids in digestion via the emulsification of ...Read more

I had a ultra scan today and I was told that I have a shadow on my liver. What us this and can I die from this?

Need more testing: A "shadow" is an extremely non-specific term that could mean anything from something totally innocuous to a potentially serious condition. Further tests would be necessary for clarification. These options would include a CT scan or an MRI. Please check with your doctor. ...Read more

An X-ray showed a shadow over my liver and the bloods were high - I have lots of pain in that area going up to my right shoulder. What could it be?

The diaphragm: Liver or biliary tract problems can cause pressure, inflammation, and/or irritation of the diaphragm. This will cause pain in the shoulder. This should be followup up with more sophisticated imaging than a plain xray, like an MRI or ct scan. ...Read more

I had an abdomen scan last week.I have go for an MRI as shadows on the liver and fat around the liver and slightly enlarged gallblader. i am worried?

It is normal: to be concerned. There is not enough information for me to speculate about the 'shadows' on the liver, if you have a fatty liver it is not unusual for small areas of non-fatty liver to look abnormal on ultrasound, so hopefully that is all it is. ...Read more

During an echocardiogram they found a shadow on my cousins liver, she has low white blood cell count, and her sugar was high. What can all this mean?

During an echocardiogram they found a shadow on my cousins liver, she has low white blood cell count, and her sugar was high. What can all this mean?

Needs follow up: The liver can be imaged with ultrasound (as in the echocardiogram), ct and MRI and depending on the type lesion, there may be different advantages to using different types of imaging. Follow up is needed to assess if this lesion is benign or needs further assessment. Some lesions may require a biopsy to be examined by a pathologist for a diagnosis. ...Read more

What are the probability that liver shadows are tumours?

What are the probability that liver shadows are tumours?

It depends: Most healthy people have spots on their liver. These are usually benign (not cancerous) cysts called "hemangiomas", which are spaces filled with fluid. The radiologist who interprets the images will know if the spots are worrisome, and will then order a different test or a biopsy. If you have had cancer, spots in your liver could be signs of spread and need to be checked more thoroughly. ...Read more

There are 3non-shadowing echogenic nodules in the right lobe of the liver located within segment 6/7 witch measure 23x27x30, 25x23x23, and 9x11x11 mm?

Need more imaging: Liver lesions may be due to multiple causes - most are benign but some can be caused by non_benign causes such as tumor or infection. I suggest you see a gastroenterologist. ...Read more

Should I be concerned about two shadows being found on the CT scan of my liver?

Should I be concerned about two shadows being found on the CT scan of my liver?

It depends: Most findings are benign. However, you need to ask your doctor what these mean - Do they appear benign? Are they worrisome for cancer? What are they (cysts, adenomas, etc)? Are you at risk for liver cancer (do you have cirrhosis) and need to be concerned about this. Please talk with the physician who ordered the study to see what these spots may be. ...Read more

Hi im soon to be having an operation to remove my gallbladder as it is full of stones and making me very poorly. During an ultra sound scan a shadow was found on the tail end of my pancreas and liver. Iv only just turned 28 what could this be please?

Not enough info: Without seeing the actual ultrasound or at least the ultrasound report, it would be difficult to figure out what is meant by a "shadow" in your pancreas or liver. It is possible that they could have meant that you have a stone in your bile duct, but your surgeon will be sure to check for that in the proper setting. If you have the report itself, consider a consult on HealthTap Prime or Concierge. ...Read more

What does the liver do?

What does the liver do?

Synthetic plant: Along with detoxifying, as dr. Proffitt said, the liver is a major site of protein synthesis for the body. It make albumin, the protein in your blood that maintains osmotic balance. It also makes many of the clotting factors that keep you from bleeding to death. That's why when you liver fails you bloat (due to loss of osmotic balance) and bleed (due to loss of clotting factors). ...Read more
