Severe Vertigo May Be Relieved By
Vertigo: A hot shower can cause vertigo simply by changing the temperature in your ear canals. This is the same principle we use when we do caloric testing of the inner ears (semi-circular canals). We raise and lower the temperature of the ear canals and this translates into raising or lowering the temperature of the inner ears. This temperature change causes inner fluids to move which can cause vertigo. ...Read more
Woke up with severe vertigo, has lasted 3 hours. No other symptoms, never had vertigo last this long. What could be cause, and should I see a dr?
Usually benign: probably was positional, due to changes in fluid balance in the canals of the inner ear, and the effects little floating crystals then have, in those canals. Recurrence should prompt you to a Dr. Could be due to head trauma, allergies, ear, sinus, throat, and other respiratory infections. Rarely, supplements or meds. Many times no identifiable source. Get well. ...Read more
What can I do about severe vertigo and showering? What would cause severe vertigo from a hot shower? Are there any ways to decrease the severity of the vertigo, other than taking cold showers?
Depends on cause: Vertigo is defined as a perception of movement of you or your surroundings often accompanied by nausea and vomiting. If lightheadedness then you feel like you want to pass out. If lightheaded then i would be concerned about heat making blood vessels dilate lowering blood pressure which may indicate autonomic dysfunction. If it happens with eyes closed only then that may indicate weak inner ears. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
How should I deal with my labrynthitis? Should I just rest, or do my best to move around still despite the severe vertigo?
Some suggestions: An acute vestibular labyrinthitis is time limited, tending to phase out over several days. Staying active is OK, as long as you recognize risk of falling with injury, and possible exacerbation of need to vomit. Do not see any palliative medication for your problem, but you might benefit from Ginger Root 1000 mg thrice daily. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers
Hi i was just wondering what is it that i'm suffering with? I get severe vertigo and severe jerks when i doze off to sleep
Vetigo: Vertigo and dizziness causes can be hard to diagnose and are often multifactorial. That being said, one of the most common causes is inner ear issues (vestibular problems). See a dr. For an evaluation as there is medication that may help you. Certain physical therapy and/or vestibular rehab is available as well that can help relive these symptoms. Best wishes. ...Read more

Reassess diagnosis: Epley maneuver is often useful to address positional vertigo, but doesn't always work. BPPV: i see you are close. You can make an spot to see me this week. You most likely have BPPV which will require a maneuver to fix. How can I find out what's causing my severe vertigo and why does my body jerk severely when i doze off to sleep. It's scary as I am forced to stay awak?
Diagnosis: The answer to your question is to get a proper diagnosis by an ENT doc. Over the counter dramamine (dimenhydrinate) (meclizine) sedates the brain and may give you some relief. But to get rid of the vertigo, you need to know what is the cause. 5 possibilities include: bppv, meniere's disease, viral labyrinthitis, autoimmune disease of the inner ear and central (brain) disease. See ent. ...Read more
5 days GRADUAL onset of vertigo, getting worse and worse. And now severe headache. Seems to be worse when I'm sat down or laid down. Possible DX?
Migraine-associated vertigo, can this cause severe lightheadedness as opposed to actual spinning or dizziness ?
Sure it can: While the most traditional & specific definition of what is known as vertiginous migraine or as you say "Migraine-associated vertigo" is that of actual vertiginous sensations or spinning/whirling/tumbling/moving feeling either followed by or preceded by migraine headaches there's nothing that says that a person couldn't simply have an event of lightheadedness or disconnected feeling & headaches. ...Read more

Had severe vertigo attacks two days in a row, when waking up. As soon as I raised my head off the pillow. Any ideas on the cause?
Whoa there, Linda: Dizziness & vertigo can be frustrating symptoms for doctors because the cause is often obscure. But in an otherwise healthy teenager, the cause is also highly likely to be benign & self-limited. It could be a viral labyrinthitis, which like most viral infections goes away after a few days. 2 days of vertigo is like 2 days of a cold: inconvenient but just be a patient patient & wait it out. ...Read more

Experiencing chronic vertigo and severe tinnitus leaving me bedridden (4 days). Healthy 39yo female. What is this? Foods to avoid? Can I take NSAIDS?
Possible Meniere's: Recurrent episodes of vertigo (a spinning sensation) accompanied by severe tinnitus for 4 days is certainly concerning for Meniere's, but there are other diagnoses that should be considered. It is important that you be seen by an otolaryngologist who can make the appropriate diagnosis. For my Meniere's patients, I ask them to avoid excessive salt, sugar and caffeine. NSAIDs are OK. ...Read more
