Seroma: Pain in your biopsy area 2 months later is likely a seroma. You should alert your surgeon so she/he can order an ultrasound and possible drainage. Monitor the area for redness, warmth, or increasing tenderness. Wear a supportive bra in the meantime (mainly for comfort). ...Read more

Biopsy (Definition)

Biopsy is tissue removed by needle or cutting to remove part of a body part. It is usually a small amount of material that is processed by a pathologist. Most of the time it is stained and looked at through a microscope to arrive at a diagnosis. Special processes are done for some tissues or problems. My mom has stage 4 small cell lung cancer in both lungs, in severe pain no biopsy no trtreatment what happens now? Life expectancy?

Functional status: First, I am so sorry for you and your family. Lung cancer can spread very quickly. You mentioned hospice had been called. In general, that is an option when an individual has a life expectancy of less than 6months. But remember, that is just a prognosis (guess/estimate) not a hard set fact. The most important factors are her function, such as her ability to stand, walk, eat, etc. ...Read more

Can someone with NSCLC with mets, have a biopsy taken from secondary tumor met on adrenal, if primary is too burned from radiation? Or only primary?

Can someone with NSCLC with mets, have a biopsy taken from secondary tumor met on adrenal, if primary is too burned from radiation? Or only primary?

Yes: If a primary lesion metastasizes, the primary or any of the metastatic foci can be used for biopsy purposes. For the most part the tumor cellular pattern remains the same and in terms of immunohistochemistry, the proteins that define the primary are carried into the metastastic lesions which can be biopsied to define that protein needed for therapy that characterizes the primary. ...Read more

Discuss with doc: There are tumors in this region that grow briefly and stop, causing no interference with life other than the stress involve with knowing it might. It can be a very difficult area to get to without causing injury to sensitive structures that make and release hormones. Cautious monitoring of the tumor (MRI) and hormones (blood tests) with the neurosurgeon working with the endo doc is the safest appr. ...Read more

ProbShouldn't Biopsy: Adrenal masses should very rarely be biopsied. Pheochromocytoma, an adrnealine producing tumor, must always be excluded prior to biopsy. Adrenal masses are tested by imaging blood and urine test. Biopsy is probably only indicated in patients with known history of cancer and suspicion for metastasis to adrenal. ...Read more

Sorry about Mom: Get two pathologists to sign off on the diagnosis. Your mother needs to make an informed decision whether to pursue chemotherapy / radiation or to opt for comfort measures only. Cherish all the time that the two of you have together. It may be several years, or she may go in a few more days. I am glad you are there for her. ...Read more
