Not unusual: An MRI arthrogram is preformed usually injecting gadolinium and iodinated contrast. One could have allergy reaction to either. Pain after this study is rarely sever. Talk to doctor who did the study. Infection or blood in the joint could produce pain. Rather than taking a pain med do not overlook the possibility of an adverse reaction. Yes and No: You should not use any narcotic medication for joint pain related to arthrograms. NSAID such as motrin or tylenol (acetaminophen) may help. I think that joint pains related to the arthrogram can in part be related to a patient's sensitivity to one or more of the drugs used in the study, but not an allergy as such. Many of my patients get good relief with adding 25 mg of benedryl orally with the NSAID. ...Read more

Yes: Yes you can have both. MRI contrast is injected into hip joint and MRI repeated. Theory being that if MRI without contrast revealed the problem no further testing needed. False negatives: Almost all tests have some false negatives. Depending on the severity and extent of synovitis it may not show up on tests. It also depends on the type of inflammation. There can similarly be false positive test results for most of the tests. Wish you good health! ...Read more

AS: Ankylosing spondylitis is of concern. A plain x-ray of the sacroiliac joints would pick up images of bone sclerosis better than an mri. A rheumatologist can discern and advise.
