Unusual: Late teenage female with severe bilateral knee pain with range of motion has an unusual problem. Absent a history of bilateral knee injury, these symptoms suggest an autoimmune arthritic problem or an inherited problem of joint hypermobility syndrome. Knee pain in petella tendon area. Hurts when sitting down too long or standing up.?

Torn miniscus, bursa: The more common causes of your symptoms are petallar bursitis (the patellar bursa becomes swollen, irritated and painful), and a meniscal tear (tearing of the cartilage disc between the femur and the tib/fib complex. If it persists for more than a few days, you need to see an orthopedist for an eval and knee MRI. In the meantime, an adjustable brace would not hurt, and would give support. ...Read more

Kneecaps & alignment: Knee pain in younger people is often due to foot, knee, and hip alignment issues. Pain when the knee is bent comes from pressure of the kneecap into the femur. An alignment evaluation, orthotics, and a specific exercise program designed by a pt for you should help. Without an injury, a meniscus problem is unlikely. ...Read more

Chondromalacia patel: This sounds like chondromalacia patella which is softening of the cartilage underneath your kneecap. Best treatment for this is to do exercises that strengthen your quadriceps muscles. You can discuss with your physician about this or after your evaluation if x-rays and other imaging looks okay you could have physical therapy help you work on a new program ...Read more

Good Examination: Not sure if your pregnancy history has a role in your current pain? There are some pregnancy related back problems. You have symptoms of discogenic pain and sciatica. At this point I would recommend a good history and examination to better diagnosis your problem. Therapy would be a good first step. However, not all therapy is the same; it is very dependent on the diagnosis and examination. ...Read more

Where I up I am constantly getting up and down to get stuff from the printer. Now my knees hurt, and I get a back knee pain near the behind area??

Probably overuse: Since this involves both knees, it is probably from overuse, especially since only the back of the knee. Take more frequent breaks to get up and walk around. Perform simple range of motion activities by moving the knee through full range of motion and stretch at the limits of motion when fully straight and fully bent. Ice may help if pain persists. Apply ice to painful area 15-20 min/hour. ...Read more

Uncertain see peds: You need to see your pediatrician to see if your child needs a rheumatology or orthopedic evaluation. Since she is otherwise active and has no other limitations I suspect it is physiologic and no inflammatory joint disease. Even though the pain is in the knee sometimes hip problems can radiate to the knee. ...Read more

I have knee pain when going down stairs, sitting indian style, or straightening my leg when it has been bent for awhile. What could this be?

OA vs PFPS: Two possibilities are most likely. The first is osteoarthritis, or wear and tear ("rust in the joint"). This is usually in middle-age people but can occur earlier with excessive use. Another option is patellofemoral pain syndrome, or inflammation where the kneecap tracks on the femur (upper leg bone). In most people, these can both be helped with antinflammatory meds and quad strengthening. ...Read more

I am 21 years old and every year when it starts to get cold I get severe knee pain at night. What does that signify?

Inflammation probabe: There is no scintific evidence why some people get pain in the knees when it gets cold, it seems you get some inflammation in the knee joints and you may take Aleve (naproxen) or Motrin to relive these symptoms if you are not allegic and can tolerate it
but people with preexisting arthritis can feel the pain get worse or start when it gets cold
so have it checked by your doctor. ...Read more

My dr told me I had knee bursitis 6 months ago but after the swelling went down I still feel pain constantly. How can I get rid of the knee pain?

Go back to your doc: The first step in fixing any problem is an accurate diagnosis. If the swelling has gone away but the pain is continueing it is time to go back to your doctor and get rechecked. This could be as simple as requiring more time to heal or you could have an additional problem such as chondromalacia (a roughening of the underside of the kneecap) or a joint/ tendon injury. ...Read more

Was weeding & kneeling for 15 minutes. When I stood up, can't bear weight on left knee w/out severe front knee pain. Doesn't hurt when sitting. Tips?

24y/o F with left knee pain. When I go down stairs/hills, keep it bent for 3 mins or so and at night I get random shooting pains that move up my thigh?

Knee Cap: Knee pain is very common. The symptoms you describe on the surface sound like patellofemoral syndrome. This can have many causes. Some if which include improper muscle activation, misalignment of the knee cap, or poor biomechanics. The sharp pain in the thigh is not part of this process. I would recommend evaluation by a sports medicine specialist. ...Read more
