Severe Gas Pains After A Colonoscopy
Gastro recommended CT and colonscopy for mild abdominal pain/gas. 23 yrs old. If CT scan shows nothing, is colonoscopy necessary? No bloody stools
Options available: CT scan of the abdomen may be indicated but not for mild pain alone. If the symptoms are progressive and there is concern for Cancer (unlikely in your age group), then only I would consider doing a CT. Similarly Colonoscopy is not indicated because of pain alone. If there is bowel irregularity or blood in stool Colonoscopy is reasonable to do. In your case I would watch /monitor for 4-6 weeks, then ...Read more

I had a colonoscopy 7 days ago and still have minor gas pains. Not severe just annoying. Is it normal. I also have ibs?
Not unheard of.: Although it is not usual to have persistent pain after a colonoscopy, it is not unusual to have some discomfort for one to weeks afterwards. As long as the pain is mild and is improving, I would not worry about it. If it persists longer than two weeks or worsens abruptly, then I would contact your gastroenterologist immediately. Good luck! ...Read more

Normal vs. Healthy:: Normal means common, zero reliable relationship with healthy & defined by medical industry as average to include the central 96% of common for any variable. What you describe is neither healthy nor common in most cases after colonoscopy. But it all depends on your anatomy/function before exam, what was done during exam & your responses afterwards. Sounds like intestinal distension; yet not moving. ...Read more

My colonoscopy was last wed & since then I have wokeup every morning with a bad tummyache & have had lots of gas in the evening. Is it normal or bad?
Check with doc: The symptoms you describe are common right after a colonoscopy (from air that is used to inflate your colon), but they shouldn't last for days. You should let your doctor know you're still having these symptoms. There can be complications from a colonoscopy, and it's important to make sure these are recognized early! ...Read more
I had an unsussesful colonoscopy last week. They couldn't complete due to pain from the gas/air pumped in. How common is this? What's the alternative.
Colonoscopy: Incomplete colonoscopy can occur up to 5 to 10% of the time. Whether a repeat attempt would be successful mostly depends on why it was unsuccessful in the first place. You should talk to your G.I. doc about whether a repeat attempt with better sedation or a better prep would be useful. If not, a "virtual" colonoscopy might be the next step. Good luck. ...Read more
Retained air post-CO: Air is used to inflate your colon & permit inspection during the colonoscopy procedure. During your recovery before discharge you will be encouraged to pass the air back out. This is accomplished by changing your position in bed, gentle abdominal pressure, & verbal encouragement to overcome your natural embarrassment at passing gas. Some air may persist for several hours--call for help if longer. ...Read more
