Severe Cough After A Cold
I am in 6th week of pregnancy. Now I got severe cough and cold.... Willl it affect babay or pregnancy?
Most likely not: It is not the illness that is the problem. Your body's immune system should be able to take care of the cough and cold symptoms. The problem would be if you were taking medicines in order to deal with those. The placenta is an amazing barrier, however, when you're pregnant, limit yourself to tylenol/fluids/bedrest and other non-med support measures. Medication with pregnancy is a last resort. ...Read more
The cough reflex is a protective mechanism that uses muscles in your throat and chest to expel mucous and saliva that may contain pathogens that would otherwise possibly be inhaled via aerosol or to expel pathogens infecting the throat and respiratory system. Cough benefits the host by reducing load and benefits the pathogen which may then spread via aerosol. ...Read more

Is it ok to take Claritin (loratadine) 24hr and then Theraflu nighttime severe cough and cold a few hrs later before bed?
Flu: Yes. BUT please remember that if you do not feel better after 2-3 days, then a visit to your primary doctor is advised. Assuming you have the flu virus, then take those meds, some Tylenol (acetaminophen) for fever and lots of liquid (juice, soup, water). If your cough and other symptoms persist, as I mentioned, schedule a doctor appointment. I do not think the cortisone is a factor at this point. Best wishes ...Read more

Follow up: Over the counter medications are not very effective. I would recommend relieving congestion with nasal saline, keeping well hydrated and taking a tsp of honey. If your cough is severe, a follow up is recommended. If there is difficulty breathing /high fever, please see your physician. Most uncomplicated viral illnesses clear up in two weeks. Virtual appt can be made. ...Read more

It's been a couple of days since blurriness in one of my eyes. How long will it take to heal? I have severe cough and cold, and blow my nose a lot.
Viral syndrome: Your description is most consistent with a viral syndrome. The blurry vision may be due to eye surface irritation from conjunctivitis but it also can be related to inflammation in the cornea (keratitis) or rarely iritis. Since the blurriness seems to be persistent, I would go see an eye doctor. ...Read more

Clarify: I am presuming your question is about your son? Age? Based on the information given including history and meds, would suggest seeing a primary care doc. For an adult with no other history a viral illness is self limiting. But that is not the case for the history mentioned so seeking help us acceptable. Best of luck ...Read more

Cough: In general, a symptom of coughing can be a sign of a viral or bacterial infection. Cough specific syrups or tablets are readily available for relief. Decongestant medicines can help if the cough is related to sinus drainage. Giving the cough ample time to clear is advisable but if you develop fevers, shortness of breath, chest pains, or bloody sputum, it may be time to see your doctor. ...Read more

Inflammation...: A persistent cough will maintain some inflammation in the airways which can cause bronchospasm and continued cough. What to do if I felt different and developrd a dry severe cough. I am off of it thank god! Did you find some natural alternatives?
Cough, no fever: I would ask if the cough is dry, or productive of phlegm, and, if so, the color. Some people do not mount a high fever. Severe cough should be evaluated by your physician. They may be able to diagnose a pneumonia by lung exam, but you may need to have an xray. Persistent cough may also be a sign of allergies or asthma. You should be examined. ...Read more
