What could be the significance of low serum albumin in respiratory failure patient?

What could be the significance of low serum albumin in respiratory failure patient?

Protien malnutrition: Albumen is an acute phase reactant and it is difficult to interpret well in the critically ill. That being said, very low albumen can indicate protein malnutrition, making it more difficult to heal wounds, makes drug delivery less reliable (some drugs bind to albumen for transport), make pulmonary edema harder to treat... The list is long. For that reason, we generally feed patients earlier now. ...Read more

My serum albumin is 5.3 is that to high? Always was normal . Is there any way to bring it down?

No need to: If you were dehydrated your albumin may seem high, even though yours is at the upper end of normal. If the tourniquet is left on for too long, it may cause a spurious high reading. There are no disease associated with high albumin. See this site for more info. http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/article/003480.htm ...Read more

Labs show serum albumin 3.9 (ref. Range 3.5-5.5)and globulin at 1.9 range (1.5-4.5) but says total serum protein low at 5.8 range(6.0-8.5) what gives?

Probably nothing.: Total protein consists of the sum of the globulin proteins and albumin. Since the individual values for globulin and Albumin are normal, it is questionable that there is anything wrong. This may just be normal for you. ...Read more

My micoalbumin is 555 but my Bun/Creatinine ratio is normal and my Serum Albumin is normal. I am diabetic. What does 555 mean? Is it kidney failure?

Diabetic nephropathy: B"sd kidney failure is marked by elevation of creatinine. Microalbumin is a sensitive test for early kidney changes seen in diabetes and hypertension. Unless very high, standard albumin will be normal. Fatty liver is of concern but not directly related. To prevent progression of kidney disease 1. control of diabetes 2. blood pressure control 3. I just had some lab work done. What would cause a low serum albumin level, high alpha 1 and 2 and high c-reactive protein and low vit d?

Likely inflammation: Generally, decreased Albumin and increased globulins are seen in inflammatory conditions, acute or chronic. The fever ; high CRP also support this. Of note, other conditions may cause this including cancer, but still, the most likely explanation is infection/inflammation. A low vitamin d level may be caused by inadequate intake, no sun exposure, absorbtion problem, kidney disease, obesity. ...Read more

I was diagnosed?Ulcerative colitis, recent results show , (total)protein 8.7, serum albumin , 3.9, serum globulin 4.8. Should i be worried?

Labs, no; U.C., yes: The lab results you mentioned are not worrisome. However, the diagnosis of ulcerative colitis (uc) is significant & will impact your health for the long-term. To address uc, maintain excellent rapport with your GI doctor & report flares, take the medications he gives you, follow his advice regarding tobacco, diet, & to avoid Aspirin & nsaid's, &get regular colonoscopies for dysplasia surveillance. ...Read more

Is serum albumin an independent predictor of survival in patients with breast cancer?

Is serum albumin an independent predictor of survival in patients with breast cancer?

Interesting question: I do not know of any data that point to Albumin as an independent prognostic factor in early breast cancer. Patients with advanced cancer often develop malnutrition and cachexia which will lower the Albumin levels. Those patients will do poorly so indirectly it may give you a rough idea of prognosis in those advanced cases. ...Read more
