What kind of short term memory loss is associated with benzodiazepines?

What kind of short term memory loss is associated with benzodiazepines?

Anterograde amnesia: Technically called anterograde amnesia, this is impaired "recording" of information. Since it isn't recorded into memory, it can't be recalled later. (this is in contrast to retrograde amnesia, where previously stored material can't be retrieved.) there are also deficits in attention and concentration, which in turn can impair memory encoding. Overall, one appears scattered & absent-minded. ...Read more

What is safer for long term use and short term for all types of anxiety, benzodiazepines, paxil, zoloft, lexapro, buspar, (buspirone) or marijuana(used correctly)?

What is safer for long term use and short term for all types of anxiety, benzodiazepines, paxil, zoloft, lexapro, buspar, (buspirone) or marijuana(used correctly)?

Not benzo's.: Hello - long term use of benzodiazapines can lead to tolerance. Marijuana can cause marked psychiatric problems in some people including anxiety, psychosis & paranoia. Paxil can be used long -term but most of my patients have experienced more side effects with it then from Lexapro & zoloft. I see you are on Lexapro -it has an excellent side effect profile. Buspar (buspirone) is very safe for long-term use. ...Read more

Can we give temazepam and oxazepam with in short interval difference to the patient?

Depends on dose: Unfortunately, without knowing the dose of each - it's impossible to say. However, both temazepam and oxazepam have decent half lives (roughly 8 hours) - so short interval dosing shouldn't be needed at therapeutic doses. Wish there was a better answer - Hope that helps! ...Read more

Can you tell me what is the best benzodiazepine?

There is no "best": Benzodiazepines all work on the same receptors, and pretty much do the same thing. Some are short-acting, others intermediate, others long-acting. Some are rapidly absorbed, others slowly. Some hit the brain very fast, others much more slowly. If you want something for temporary anxiety, a rapidly-absorbed short acting drug (like xanax (alprazolam) or ativan) may be best, for gad, Clonazepam or librium. ...Read more
