Gloria: If this happens without food and worsened by emotional distress it is likely benign. But you should be mindful of red flags like food getting stuck, regurgitation of indigested food or weight loss. Possible fungal...: Overgrowth. If you have cultures, you are probably already on an antibiotic for something. S. Viridens is a common oral bacteria that we all have on some level. Yours may be higher than normal but the white on your tongue could be candidiasis from a lack of "regular" bacteria that keep it down. Try 1/2 hydrogen peroxide/ 1/2 or mouthwash, brush your tongue, if no luck see a dr. May need nystatin. ...Read more

Need exam/swab: If you go to the doc, s/he can obtain a good ENT exam, including a tonsilar swab for a rapid Strep test. An acute EBV tonsillitis looks very similar with fever, headache, muscle aches, sore throat, lymphadenopathy & white plaques on the tonsils. EBV can even cause right upper belly pain (acute viral hepatitis). Antibiotics will help a strep but not viral infection. Consider sugarless lozenges. ...Read more
