My dr ordered a culture of my urine and a complete semen analysis.Does this check for all bacteria and infections or would a semen culture be helpful also?Or is it not needed with the first two tests?
Depends: You do not state the reason for the study but i'll assume a prostate problem. A regular urine culture checks for common bacteria but not gonorrhea or chlamydia if a std might be an issue. A semin analysis would normally examine the components and ratio of active to inactive sperm. Have a dr. explain: It's all important, for different reasons. One way of simplifying a sa is to multiply the total count (concentration * volume) by the %motility * %morphology to get a total-motile-normal count. No: People do not get semen analyses unless they are having infertility problems. So, if a guy is married, settled down, happily having lots of sex with his likewise happy wife, and they have not gotten pregnant after 9-12 months of trying, then do consider a semen analysis. Semen testing: Sperm motility and morphology in semen analysis are difficult tests to standardize, and tend to be subjective. Additionally, correlation with fertility is not absolute.
