What is the most common cause for self mutilation/cutting?

Coping: There is no single cause for self-mutilating behavior. Generally, self-cutting is usually the result of an inability to cope in healthy ways with deep psychological distress. Some people have a hard time understanding, expressing, or managing their emotions. Cutting distracts them from these painful emotions and gives them a sense of control (albeit a false one). Is branding (intentional burning) considered self-mutilation? Also, what are signs of proper healing in a burn?

Branding: Branding is done on ranches with cattle who go out to pasture, and might need to be identified if they get out of bounds. It was also unfortunately done to some slaves during pre-civil war times. Either causes great pain. If you are doing these things to yourself, you need help beyond Prozac and seroquel (quetiapine). How do I stop self projecting?

How do I stop self projecting?

Good question: Projection is an unconscious defense mechanism used by most humans (some more than others) when uncomfortable feelings like anger and rage are coming up inside. One avoids them by attributing them to others -- and then treats others as if they have the disavowed feelings. Relationships are harmed this way. Individual psychotherapy can help you a lot; u can learn to accept & deal w/your feelings. ...Read more
