Vitreous floater: It sounds like you have vitreous floaters, little grayish spots of differing shapes in the vitreous cavity of your eye. These increase with aging, myopia, lattice degeneration, and can arise from retinal tears, inflammation, trauma, surgery. The dilated eye examination is important to rule out serious causes that need treatment. As long as this has been done, just monitor for change. ...Read more

I'm seeing a black line (like a strand of hair) in left side of peripheral vision 24/7. Went to hospital and they said it's cataract. Is that true?

Unlikely: This is almost certainly a change in the pattern of the vitreous gel in the back of your eye. This is an aging process called vitreous syneresis. Cataracts alter the vision by lowering the acuity and causing light glare, but they do not insert "lines" in the vision. If this worries you, see your ophthalmologist for confirmation. ...Read more

A choridal nevus is a freckle in the choroid the layer under the retina covering the inside of the eye. Most are benign but need to be monitored. A retinal exam and a bscan ultrasound can give clues if it is a melanoma (malignant tumor). A second opinion is a good idea in this case. ...Read more

Sine last december, I sometimes see on and off black small floating dots in my vision. They go away after I blink a few times. What causes this?

Floaters float!: Floaters are tiny clumps of gel or cells floating inside the vitreous, casting shadows on the retina. They are more visible when you look at the sky or a bright, evenly lit surface, and may look like little dots, circles, lines, clouds or cobwebs. You have always had some floaters since birth, even if you were not aware of them. New floaters come from tiny bits of retinal tissue. ...Read more

Eye doctor to check!: A person who had normal vision, and then cannot see out of an eye (checked by covering one eye and then the other eye), needs to be examined by an eye doctor right away. This is also true if the person cannot see one part of the picture from an eye. If there is a consistent spot that blocks part of the picture, the doctor needs to look (the E.R. Has an eye doctor on call, if it is after-hours). ...Read more

When I stand up after sitting for either a long time or short, I almost always get blurred vision, everything turns dark... This happens at least 3 times a day. When the vision starts to become black, I can still see here and there, but not perfectly. I

Hi,: Hi, if I understand you correctly, you get blurred or darkened vision, with weakness of the knees and a feeling like you are going to pass out about three times after sitting for a long while and then standing up. You indicated that you have passed out from dehydration and heat stroke in the past. I cannot diagnose the reason for this. I think you need to see your doctor about this and he or she can check you for orthostatic hypotension or other conditions. Sometimes when you get up, gravity causes blood to pool in your legs, as a result, less blood is making its way up to the brain. Because the blood brings oxygen to the brain, you can feel lightheaded. Other symptoms can include feeling dizzy, having blurred or dimmed vision (sometimes to the point of being unable to see), and feeling faint. Make sure you get enough liquids every day. Sometimes eating smaller meals more often can help. Get up slowly when you go from lying to sitting or sitting to standing (especially after eating). Ask your doctor to check over your medications, to see if any of them may be contributing to this. There is potential to faint and become injured with your symptoms, so you should definitely contact your doctor. Take care. ...Read more
