What is secondary hypothyroidism?

What is secondary hypothyroidism?

Unstimulated thyroid: Hypothyroidism describes a situation in which the thyroid gland doesn't produce normal amounts of thyroid hormone (t4). In primary hypothyroidism, the thyroid can't make enough thyroid hormone. T4 levels are low, and TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) is high. In secondary hypothyroidism, the thyroid can work normally, but due to low levels of tsh, doesn't (t4 & TSH levels both low or low-normal). ...Read more

Age:40, early osteoarthiritis changes are seen on my knee x-rays. How to find out if it is primary or secondary? Any tests? Does hypothyroid cause it?

Possibly: There are several labs that can be done to distinguish other possible causes of arthritis, though there is no test that is specific for osteoarthritis and yes, thyroid problems can contribute to bone issues. ...Read more

If I go on a medication for hypothyroidism like Synthroid (thyroxine) to repair a short term issue secondary to other meds will I be dependent on it for life?

If I go on a medication for hypothyroidism like Synthroid (thyroxine) to repair a short term issue secondary to other meds will I be dependent on it for life?

Need vs dependent: If one's doctor has recommended synthroid (thyroxine) for a hypothyroid condition, it is because of a need. Occasionally one may no longer need the synthroid (thyroxine) and it can be stopped without fear of dependence. Most, however, will need it lifelong. ...Read more

My third generation TSH is 0.085 et my ft4 is 0.59..Is this indicative of secondary hypothyroidism? I has so many symptoms including extream fatigue..

Unlikely: Are you taking thyroid medications or over the counter thyroid meds? Are you on any medications that contain T3 such as armour or cytomel (liothyronine)? This is the typical lab pattern for someone on those meds. If not, repeat the tests including free T3 and see your doctor if it still look like above. ...Read more

Clomid (clomiphene) : Clomid (clomiphene) is not a standard treatment for male hypogonadism, and that is why the second doctor is saying no to clomid (clomiphene). I can't comment on the pituitary function without seeing the patient. We all rely much too much on labs and forget about our patient's symptoms frequently. My main concern here is the 20 pound weight loss, which is not from thyroid or gonadal problems. It could be from adrenal insufficiency, and hopefully that has been evaluated as part of the pituitary evaluation. ...Read more

TSH level 5.47 & total testosterone 245. LH is 2 & FSH is 1. Secondary hypogonadism & hypothyroidism. im 31 my dr suggested synthroid, (thyroxine) TRT. yes or no?

TSH level 5.47 & total testosterone 245. LH is 2 & FSH is 1. Secondary hypogonadism & hypothyroidism. im 31 my dr suggested synthroid, (thyroxine) TRT. yes or no?

Yes: I would recommend Armour or Nature's Thyroid over Synthyroid. Synthyroid is a synthetic the others are natural. Definitely would recommend testosterone using a bio-identical. Pellet therapy preferably because will last for 4-6 months and give superior levels. Can get more info at BioTe.com and find a Dr. in your area that can help and is well trained. ...Read more

You can basically eat what you please (healthy choices, of course, and limit your calories as you may tend to overeat / get fat.) but you must take your thyroid replacement medicine or your life will be ruined. ...Read more
