Hair Loss (Definition)

Hair loss, otherwise known as alopecia, can be caused by different reasons, including damage to the hair shaft or follicles or fungal infections. There are two main types of alopecia. Alopecia areata occurs when the body's immune system attacks hair follicles and causes hair to fall out. Androgenetic (or androgenic) alopecia, on the other hand, is an inherited form of hair loss. With alopecia areata, hair can fall out in patches all over the body. With androgenetic alopecia, hair on the head first thins and then falls out. In men, this is called male pattern hair loss; in women, it is called ...Read more

Does burning with seborrheic dermatitis mean more hair will fall out? I had a flare up and am using clobetasol. Scalp feels tight and pink in place

Does burning with seborrheic dermatitis mean more hair will fall out? I had a flare up and am using clobetasol. Scalp feels tight and pink in place

Maybe, maybe not: Mild seborrheic scalp dermatitis may not cause any hair loss at all, just a bit itchy, flaky scalp etc...Severe case may cause some hair loss, but prompt and adequate treatment likely will allow the hair to grow back in a months. Just make sure it is not scalp fungus/ringworm as clobetasol can make it feel better initially, but actually will make the lesion bigger/worse over time. Consult doc. ...Read more

I think I am experiencing a chemical burn or allergic reaction after using hair dye. My scalp has sores that are weeping. I do have Seborrheic Dermatitis. What can I do at home?

Exam needed: Reactions to hair dye do occur and will resolve after a period of time. Since you have more than redness or itching, I recommend that you be examined by your physician or a dermatologist to see if secondary infection is present and if so, appropriate treatment can be started. In the meantime apply warm soaks and, if possible, apply a combination of antibacterial and cortisone type cream until seen ...Read more

Can I use minoxidil for my hair while I have seborrheic dermatitis on my scalp? Or can I use apple cider vinegar topically for my scalp?

Can I use minoxidil for my hair while I have seborrheic dermatitis on my scalp? Or can I use apple cider vinegar topically for my scalp?

Apple cider: Is not going to help baldness.
Minoxidil, is hard to say; it is effective ONLY on some patterns of baldness and NOT on receeding hairline. AND irritated scalp is more likely to react to any drug put onto it. Furthermore, enough irritaiton can cause baldness (and responds to anti-inflammatories). I guess I am recommending a dermatologist. ...Read more
