Doctor insights on:
I recently switched to seasonale. I am in my third week of my first pack but have been bleeding for over a week!
Fairly common: When switching to medications like Seasonale, it is fairly common to experience abnormal flow for the first month or two. Once your body is acclimated to the medication, it will stop or decrease. As with all medications of this type, you will likely have random spotting throughout the year. ...Read more
Please tell what is the name of Lybrel and Seasonale in India,,,because i am not able to find the medicine,,or what is the alternative??
Ive took seasonale for nine days and feel horrible physically and mentally.Im going to discontinue. Will my hormones be out of whack when i dont take t?
Not really: May take a cycle for things to go back to where they were. Interesting choice for woman with acne. Most likely the progestin in this pill levonorgestrel too strong for you. Good in that it helps to limit breakthrough bleeding (bleeding when you should not bleed), but can be tough to tolerate for some women. Discuss with gyn less androgenic progestin pill. They will understand. Best of luck Dr R ...Read more
Gained almost 12 lbs since i started taking seasonale. I started it in december. I've been working out, eating healthy and still gaining? What can I do
Switch: Seasonale contains levonorgestrel. This is an older Progesterone that is more likely to cause weight gain than some of the newer progesterones. You may want to switch to a pill that contains a newer Progesterone (desogestrel, norgestimate, drospirenone) or switch to an iud as this is less likely to cause weight gain. Avoid Progesterone only methods as they are more likely to cause weight gain. ...Read more

Speak to Pharmacist: Just let the pharmacist know to give you a pill that contains Levonorgesterol and 20mcg Ethinyl Estradiol. You can then use a new pack every 21 days so as to remain continuously on the active pill which will b elite Lybrel or seasonal. ...Read more
I started seasonale a few weeks ago. I've been on my period for 2 weeks now. Is it supposed to be 3 super long periods a year or something?
Hang in there: It is not uncommon to have some irregular bleeding at the beginning of using an extended cycle pill like seasonale. However, if you're unhappy with it, talk to your doc. You may benefit from a higher estrogen containing pill which would help decrease your bleeding. Talk to your doc. Good luck. ...Read more
I've had unsafe sex 3 times, and I'm discharging pinkish/brown with no odor. I'm on seasonale birthcontrol, and I'm on month 2. What could this be?
Common on Seasonale: Seasonale birth control provides continuous active hormonal contraception for three months straight, instead of monthly placebo pills like most other birth control pills. While Seasonale unburdens most women of an unnecessary monthly period, the trade off is more break through bleeding (BTB) or spotting (pinkish / brown) discharge. Since ur having unprotected sex, u are also at risk for STI. ...Read more
I'm 4 weeks into start Seasonale.Had period before starting pills.I started spotting this week. Will spotting likely stop? How long b4 body used to it?
Varies: Seasonale is protecting you but some breakthrough bleeding or spotting is a common complaint. It is most common with the first package and may stop but it also may last for the entire 3 month pack. Some women find that their body never tolerates/adjusts to periods only every 3 months but most find it is better with the 2nd pack. Hope this helps. ...Read more
I take seasonale. Instead of the whole pack, i stopped after 60 days to have my period. I started the new pack the next sunday. Do i need back up?
No: Even taking the 60 days and then the week break and restarting you will be covered as long as didn't miss pills or anything. There is no magic to the 12 weeks for the seasonale. Can really take the break at any point. ...Read more
Sprintec vs Seasonale. I was taking sprintec continuously. On BC for estrogen replacement. which one is a higher dose. Switched due to constant flow.
BCP's: Both have a "low" dose of hormones, but taking them continuously can cause breakthrough bleeding . The most common cause is not taking the "active" pills within the same hour as the previous day. Staying punctual will usually overcome your symptoms. Stop the pills, wait five days, and resume: some bleeding may last beyond the five days, but will stop if you are regular in timing. ...Read more

Last Depo-Provera shot was in sept. Been using seasonale for almost 5 mos. I've gained 12 lbs. Is this normal? Never gained on depo. Feel hot all the time.
Weight gain: Weight gain can be an issue on either the Depo-Provera or the pills. It's an individual thing...Doesn't happen to most people. It is usually due to changes in your appetite caused hormonal effects. You may not even notice the appetite change. The only thing to do is exercise and watch your eating habits. It's real weight gain primarily, not just "water weight". Even if you stop the pill, it won't disappea. ...Read more
I have had brown discharge for at least a week and I'm on Seasonale and have my period for times a month. Is this normal?
No: Seasonale (http://www.drugs.com/seasonale.html) is a hormonal birth control pill that is intended to be taken in such a way as to lead to menses once a quarter, rather than monthly. Depending upon how long you've been taking this medication, having a period 4x/mo is not normal. Go see your prescribing physician for an evaluation. ...Read more
Hi taking seasonale 6 months, decided to delay placebos for a week and started next pack for the last 10 days, had bleeding today, everything else ok?
Breakthrough bleed: Breakthrough bleeding (bleeding at the wrong time) is very common on birth control. It happens in about 1/3 of users. Its no big deal and usually self corrects over time. If you are not satisfied or it continues to happen then consider using a different birth control method. It is a common side effect and does not mean something is wrong or that the pill is not working. ...Read more

I've recently noticed thick, red bleeding after orgasm (external stimulation) as well as painful contractions. I'm taking seasonale, no other problems?
Check up: If you have bleeding after sex, you should see a doctor. Most likely is that the bleeding is coming from the cervix, and one would want to make sure that you don't have a polyp or lesion on the cervix that's the cause of this bleeding. Less likely is it's coming from the uterus, thought that is still a possiblity. On seasonale, your lining could be thin and be cause of bleed. Get a checkup! ...Read more

I am a 27 y/o female. In the luteal phase my plasma estradiol level is 18 pg/ml, is this abnormal? When tested i was on seasonale 0.15-0.03 mg
Typical: It's typical for women to have relatively low estrogen levels while taking birth control pills. This is because the normal secretion of estrogen from the ovary is suppressed by the bcps. The normal reference ranges for the estrogen level depending on phase of the cycle are only reliable when when women aren't on any form of hormonal medication. ...Read more
I switched from seasonale to the patch and I'm on week 4 where I'm supposed to get my period and I haven't yet could it be from switching birthcontrol?
Hello,,,which medicine is most effective to stop periods among Lybrel, Seasonale or Mirena (levonorgestrel) IUD....which medicine is most effective and better???
Pills or IUD?: To be effective, pills need to be taken daily, and there may be some interaction with other meds. If there are side effects, it is easier to stop taking pills. Mirena (levonorgestrel) IUD needs to be inserted/removed by a physician and gives protection up to 5 years. Lybrel is intended for consecutive 365 days but with Seasonale there are 4 periods a year. Your doctor can help you decide which is best for you. ...Read more
