Does screw removal from ankle require a cast? Screws removed from bone

Does screw removal from ankle require a cast? Screws removed from bone

Varies: It does vary in part on surgeons preference and also the nature of the bone and fracture involved. When the screw is removed, there is a hollow bone tunnel left where the screw was that slowly fills in with bone. In some situations, this can act as a stress riser to create a new fracture and that is the usual rationale for protecting some patients with a cast after screw removal. Thank you. ...Read more

Medial malleolus broke, didnt heal, bone graph put in space, screwed in. Legs stiff, edge of bone not healed, surgery 6 month ago Is this all normal?

Stiff legs R not--: -related 2 Ur surgery. A non-union of a medial malleolus is a hard cookie 2 crumble., especially if the fragment is small. 4 any fracture primary healing is best. If not healed the fragment, fibrous tissue must B cleaned 2 bleeding bone. Same with the tibial surface, & grafting. 2nd time around is a more aggressive surgery & healing may not take place. Fractured 5th m.Tarsal 2x in 5 years, 3 surgeries, insert/remove screw (2yrs later) and remove 2nd fracture. Can sural nerve be repaired? Lots of pain

Yes can be repaired: U should see an orthopod who'll examine and investigate as necessary, to determine whether the pain is from the nerve injury or the fx, etc. The nerve if severed can certainly be repaired, probably afetr removing scar tissue, or if there is a neuroma ( nerve tumor) it can be removed as well, to reduce the pain. Good luck. ...Read more

Broke ankle thru. 2plates, 14 screws. 13 days cast and stitches removed. Sent home in tensor bandage. Is that normal?

Ankle fracture: Usually for an operated fractured ankle, there needs to be outside stability as well as internal stability around the fracture. This means a splint/cast until fracture healing is deemed satisfactory. It is different for all patients. If your physician felt your ankle fracture has healed satisfactorily enough, then it may be "normal". Please post more details if questions. Hope i helped! ...Read more

"comminuted fracture is seen within right medial cuniform bone with sliglhty displaced cortical bony fragment laterally do u think cast will heel up?

Probably: Fortunately the cuneiforms are pretty rigid with alot of soft tissue/capsular attachment that help form the midfoot. A cast should help to allow things to heal and ossify. This may predispose you to some midfoot pain/arthritis as you get older. A good arch support may help longterm. I'd let your orthopod determine if cast or boot or postop shoe is appropriate w/o seeing films. ...Read more

I has an ORIF procedure done on my right clavicle( collar Bone) using Titanium plates and 7 screws. Its healing now. Do I need to remove the plate ?

No hardware removal : You do not have to have the plate and screws removed unless they are prominent and rubbing on the skin or are causing pain. Routine plate and screw removal is not usually done because it requires a second surgery and there are holes in the bone where the screws were removed that may make it easier for the clavicle to fracture in the future. ...Read more

Have 6 screws and a plate in r foot from lisfranc fusion. Have pain and X-ray shows one screw digging a groove in neighboring bone. What options?

Painful Hardware: If the surgery was over a year ago, and the joint appears to have fused, removal of the hardware would probably be the best option. If it was fairly recent or it never fused (non-union), may need to give it some more time and/or use a bone simulator. If it is a nonunion, sometimes revision is necessary (removal of hardware and replacement with new hardware after preparing fusion site again). ...Read more
