Sciatic Pain Behind Knee
L5-S1 microdiscectomy Fri for left leg sciatic pain. Calf/foot pain relief w/some thigh/behind knee pain. Pain less AM but sharp pain down left leg into foot w/pain level of 9.5 & hurts sitting/lying.
Microdiskectomy: Give it some time; sometimes simply moving the roots around can upset the lumbar plexus and give you intermittent (even quite severe) pain, although it resolves within a week or two. Getting to the disk requires mobilization of the roots and inflammatory changes from that- or the disk herniation- itself can give this pain. As long as bowel and bladder OK, hopefully this will resolve also. Best! ...Read more

When I sit on butt with knees pulled to chest and rock I can feel a popping in butt like a muscle? Maybe my sciatic nerve popping back and forth?
I had an epidural for my knee replacement surgery and have had severe sciatic pain every since...why?
Several reasons: A knee replacement would have necessitated bedrest for a period of time. Several things could have happened. In 10-20% of the population the sciatic nerve pierces the piriformis muscle. If this muscle goes into spasm (as it might when your sitting all the time when normally active) then there will be deep buttock pain radiating to the leg in some cases. Sciatic root compression can also occur. ...Read more

How would you determine if pain radiating down the back of the leg to above the knee, is sciatic vs. Referred pain from another site (hip, pelvis, etc)?
2nd opinion from DO: With your history of fractures, chronic back pain, OA knees B/L, back trauma, you could benefit greatly from seeing an osteopathic medical doctor, who specializes in neuromusculoskeletal medicine (NMM) to evaluate and treat you. They would be able to answer this question quickly, a nd accurately, as it may be a combination of both with your complex trauma history. There are DOs locally in ME, NH, RI &MA ...Read more
I have a pain that runs from my mid-left buttocks to the back of my thigh just above the knee, what is this pain? Someone said it maybe my sciatic nerve I have had this since february I notice it when I sit for a long time or when I run, what should I do?
Sciatica: Pain in the distribution as you suggested describes the pattern of the nerve that travels in the leg called the sciatic nerve. The sciatic nerve is not the cause of the pain source, it is the result of an irritated nerve typically in the lumbar spine (low back) which are caused by herniated disks, spinal stenosis or degenerative disc disease requiring further evaluation by a spine specialist. ...Read more
I have a sore back I think sciatic nerve pinch. The front of me quad muscle is numb down to the knee are they related?
Meralgia paresthetic: Pain in the anterior & lateral (front & side) of the thigh is more often a pinched lateral cutaneous femoral nerve, rather than sciatic nerve. In any case, physical therapy can likely help both problems, but it's important to see your neurologist to get a diagnosis first. Good luck! ...Read more
Sciatic like pain stiff sore knee. No visible redness/swelling. When to worry about fluid on knee or something bad? Just saw dr for calf pain. Blood fine.
Don't worry: I would not worry so much as just that you might want to be seen for a specific diagnosis and treatment options. As you mentioned, it can be a variation of a sciatica, which is leg pain caused by an irritation if a nerve in the back; or it can be from something in the leg itself. A detailed exam and appropriate studies will likely yield the correct diagnosis. ...Read more
Am being treated for bulging disc pressing on sciatic nerve pain shoots back to front then down inner thigh to knee can this cause rash on inner thigh?
Unusual: It would be unusual for a disk to create a sciatic nerve neuropathy, but more of a root problem, which seems to correlate to your symptoms more. However, a rash would be unusual to be caused by such a nerve problem. Please see your physician to be sure it is assessed and evaluated. ...Read more
Can gout cause sciatic like pain. I have 6.5 uric acid level. Have pain in right leg. Right knee and lower back pain.
Gout and Sciatica?: This would be quite rare. Being that gout is a joint based inflammatory condition, this is highly unlikely. Keep working on getting that UA level under 6 though. Sciatica can be successfully treated though with icing, stretching, physical therapy and even anti-inflammatories (motrin, naprosyn, (naproxen) etc.). ...Read more
Can a sciatic nerve cause you to have excessive water in the knee and pain swelling in ankle and foot? Or a torn acl?
Not directly. Tho --: The nerve injury can affect the whole leg resulting in weakness, inability to stand on it. Such situation can cause a fall or injury with pain/swelling of joints of the foot/ankle/knee. Torn acl is not particularly associated with nerve injury. ...Read more
I've been having bad sciatic nerve/lower back pain, Now Right above my knee is swollen. Is that from nerves? Disck herniation? Blood clot?
None of the above: You certainly are a worrier to come up with those 3 possibilities instead of something more commonplace, like knee strain. Did a doctor diagnose you with sciatica, or did you diagnose yourself? Sounds like you need to have your knee examined by a live doctor in his/her office, someone who can counsel you about what to worry about & what not to worry about. Trusting Dr. Google is hazardous. ...Read more
Would a torn ACL cause excessive water in knee and a very sensitive calf? And swelling in ankles and foot, ? Or could a sciatic nerve cause all of this?
ACL: Yes. The water is inflammation in the knee joint - from the torn acl. Thing like a bakers cyst behind the knee or a torn knee joint capsule could cause the fluid to leak out and affect the calf and cause swelling in the affected leg. Due to the instability in the knee, you would be compensating and using muscles differently so could aggravate the affected leg and put pressure on the sciatic nerve. ...Read more

What would cause progressively worse knee pain that stems from behind the knee? It is painful to bend and to walk?
Several causes of pain behind the knee. I assume no recent trauma--you may have a baker's cyst--basically a collection of joint fluid extruded outside of the joint and formed sack there behind the knee...As it enlarges, it can cause pain and reduces ability to bend the knee.
A bit clot in the back can do so as well, but you don't have other symptoms to suggest that.
Consult your doc.
