Scared about having too many CT scans. Any data?

Scared about having too many CT scans. Any data?

Caution: A ct abdomen equals about 500 chest xrays, add a pelvis, another 500. This is 5 years background radiation and exposure is cumulative. Worse when young! think twice about the real need before doing xrays. For more about risks and benefits of ct scans see fda webs: http://www.Fda.Gov/radiation-emittingproducts/radiationemittingproductsandprocedures/medicalimaging/medicalx-rays/ucm115317.Htm. ...Read more

Computed Tomography (Definition)

Ct uses xrays taken an 360 degrees combined with a computer to see"inside" the body. The table moves as the xray tube and detectors spin around the patient 10 times a second or more! the image shows excellent soft tissue detail, enhanced with injection of intravenous contrast or oral contrast. This way the body is shown in slices, in any plane, usually axially, but ...Read more

I've had about 8 CT scans this year can it kill me ?Im scared.Lot of problems .Can i die from that many? What symptoms to look for?

Understand concern: The question is why he had had 8 ct scans in 1 year. You will not die from that many, but you are receiving a small dose of radiation with each one.Your cumulative risk of getting cancer increases over your lifetime if you continue to get scans at this rate. Please stick with one doctor and let him/her manage your care and figure out what is going on with you. ...Read more

I'm 17 I've had 2 CT scans of the head in one year I'm so scared that I'm going to get cancer! I need some reassurance I'm freaking out !

You will be ok: Radiation exposure is a necessary consequence of CT scanning. However, the amount of exposure from one head CT is equal to about half of the annunal exposure to radiation that someone gets who lives in Denver. In the amount that you are talking about some experts think that radiation from 10-15 head CTs might offer a 'slight' increase in cancer. ...Read more

I have had 3 ct scans of my lungs. Now I need one for headaches. Is this too much radiation? Scared.

I have had 3 ct scans of my lungs. Now I need one for headaches. Is this too much radiation? Scared.

You're fine: Each CT scan delivers radiation equivalent to being an airline pilot or flight crew member for a few months. Nobody's shown a measurable extra risk for cancer in these folks. If you need a scan, get it -- radiation is the least of your worries if you need a CT for headache. The prospect of brain disease is serious and I wish you a good outcome. ...Read more

Stay calm: No one can promise you that you won't have a brain aneurysm but your risk is no greater than anyone else's and we all live with risk everyday. One must be somewhat fatalistic. We all will die of something one day. You're young (17). There is no need to think about this until you're much older and have had many more experiences to put life and death into perspective. Try to take it 1 day at a time. ...Read more

I had 2 ct scans and 5 x-rays in past 2 years. All ok. No more. Scared of diagnostic radiation. Am I for sure going to get cancer compared to others?

I had 2 ct scans and 5 x-rays in past 2 years. All ok. No more. Scared of diagnostic radiation. Am I for sure going to get cancer compared to others?

No: With 2 CT scans and 5 x-rays in 2 years, you have had significant radiation exposure. it is unlikely that you have significantly increased your likelihood of getting a cancer in the future with that small amount of exposure. However, your concern is based on fact as excessive radiation exposure can increase cancer risk. Yor are 23 and should not continue that pattern of radiation exposure. ...Read more

Have received roughly 25msv of radiation from CT scans past three year. Will have no more unless absolutely nessecary! 22yr m vegetarian, eat lots of fruits and veg, what is the risk of cancer? Scared

Less dose than airli: This is a very low dose compared to other risks in our environments. It is less than an airline attendant who makes a couple of transcontinental trips a year. I think we would all be well advised to limit unnecessary radiation but if there is a medical need i would have no problem getting another ct or pet scan. The only exception would be a pregnant woman in first trimester. ...Read more

I have seen some: patient have more and not get cancer, but do understand your concern. Be on your guard with the ED. I am NOT picking on ED doc, but there job is to rule out an emergency, so they will. You can refuse serial CT scans. ...Read more

I'm 17 female I've dyed my hair a lot and I have had 3 CT scans I'm scared that I'm gonna get brain cancer?

I'm 17 female I've dyed my hair a lot and I have had 3 CT scans I'm scared that I'm gonna get brain cancer?

Increased Risk: No good data on whether hair dye increases cancer risk; best answer: almost certainly not. CT scans are another story. There is increased risk of radiation-caused cancer from CT scans. The risk is very low but not zero. A CT is a highly sophisticated Xray which uses the same type of radiation. Doctors have begun to move away from CT where possible, but sometimes CT is the only imaging study ...Read more
