Put a screw in it: I know it sounds more aggressive, but surgical care for a scaphoid fracture with the placement of a screw will likely provide you with a more definitive and successful outcome. A cast would be necessary for a very long time without surgery. If you are getting worse, get a new x-ray and see how it has changed. Surgery may be a better option for you. ...Read more

Broken my scaphoid in ny wrist im now in a cast but really want to knowif its possible for me to have a splint instead.. Would it heal still?

Depends on location: If the scaphoid is broken in the middle of the bone or closer to the forearm, healing is more difficult. These areas of the scaphoid do not have a very good blood supply. Your cast probably includes the thumb and may extend above the elbow, as well. See your physician for further discussion. http://orthoinfo.aaos.org/topic.cfm?topic=A00012 ...Read more

I broke my scaphoid in my wrist on Sunday and got a cast today, when can I return to football? Could I play a match in a few days?

No: Scaphoid fractures can be quite serious. Depending on the type of fracture, there is a chance that the blood supply to the scaphoid becomes damaged and part of the bone can die which can lead to future problems. You should see a hand surgeon for further eval to determine if you need surgery or not. Either way, you will need to refrain from sports for 6-8 weeks at minimum or you could re-injure. ...Read more

Hey, I was told that my scaphoid fracture is healing on the back end and not the front so I have another month in a cast..any advice to ensure healing?

'Behave': Meaning, don't test the limits of the cast--likely the Dr put very low lift/carry limits on the injured side--comply. Healthy diet with calcium-rich foods can't hurt--not the time to try to crash diet if looking for good bone union and to avoid surgery. No 100% answer, but hopefully these give some direction. Good luck! ...Read more

Varies: Scaphoid fractures are often difficult to fully assess with X-ray. Often a ct scan or MRI is used if someone has persistent pain and X-rays look ok. Sometimes rather than doing a lot of initial studies, we will treat a patient in a splint if they have an exam and X-rays could be consistent with a scaphoid fracture, but then dc their splint if their exam and X-ray normalize. ...Read more

Cast is for 6 week?

Scaphoid fractures: Can take longer than 6 weeks to heal. The cast, if that is the treatment used, can be discontinued only when there is certainty as to the healing. This can take 8 weeks or more and must be verified by new xrays but a times one needs to check healing with advancd studies such as CT scan. A partially healed scaphoid can lead to other problems, non union, pain re injury so patience is important ...Read more
