How does culture process in a lab work as far as looking for fungus in a hair sample? How does it work and why does it take a month?
One does not need culture to detect fungus on a hair sample. It can be detected by UV light examination of hair. Hair is usually not cultured, but if it were it does not take more than a week for the results. For good health - Have a diet rich in fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains, low fat milk and milk products, nuts, beans, legumes, lentils and small amounts of lean meats. Avoid saturated fats. Exercise at least 150 minutes/week and increase the intensity of exercise gradually. Do not use tobacco, alcohol, weed or street drugs in any form.

Could try treating: You could perform "an empiric trial", that is try to treat with antifungal cream, locally, the areas in question, and see if the hair returns. It won't be immediate, you should be patient after treatment and wait possibly a month or more. It is more likely to be fungus if the lost areas are coin-sized or splotchy. If you have lost all of your beard here and there could be some hormonal issue. ...Read more

Flaky/fuzzy green things in hair brush. No itch, not red, no patches, just hair loss. Derm said nothing--but can't they culture 4 fungus to be sure?
Nothing?????: Really? Derm. Must have said SOMETHING!!! You do not give enough information. The exam by the DR is the important thing. If the person is older than puberty scalp fungus is not likely. If there no scabs, scales, hairless spots, etc., culture is not indicated. A culture is usually of interest after it is already determined that there is infection, just to identify which fungus. ...Read more
