SAM-e has been: Studied in comparison with standard SSRI's (Zoloft (sertraline) being the most often used) and found to be effective in reducing the symptoms of MINOR depression at about the same rate. It is not good for MAJOR depression and should be used with medical supervision because it can interact with other meds. Don't know about OA. I am trying sam-e for osteoarthritis and depression. I have 200mg tablets. How much should I take in a day? Thanks!
Does Sam-e really work for depression, and anxiety? I am having problems with anger due to stress. What is the recommended dosage?
It is not a proven: Treatment. Ask your doctor for a referral to a psychologist &/or to a psychiatrist to evaluate your condition, as well as to consider medication. You should not have to suffer with depression and anxiety. A therapist can help you start figuring out what is bothering you and start finding ways to cope better with the challenges in life. ...Read more

I have mild depression but do not want to take medication. I read about sam-e. Is this a safe supplement.
I think so.:
That said, there are many safe & potentially effective supplements for depression such as travacor, serocor, eskaloft, deplin, & folanac.
Neurotransmitter, adrenal and sex hormone testing often helps identify which supplements are most likely to help.
Lifestyle adjustments-diet, sleep, activity, stress reduction, and relationship management- likewise are key.

SAM-e is used for treatment of depression and other conditions. Is it important to use enteric coated tablets if I take it?
No: The only reason to take an enteric coated medicine is if the original formula upsets your stomach. SAM-e is a supplement and not a medication and is not therefor regulated, anything may be in it. Please use with caution. If you are taking other antidepressants please tell your doctor about any supplements/homeopathic treatments you are also taking as there may be dangerous interactions. ...Read more

I am on paxil and Effexor for treatment resistant depression. Could I still take Sam-e to see if it may help. I read there are no drug reactions to paxi?
What supplements are best for controlling depression and anxiety? I've heard of omega-3's, sam-e, and 5htp. Can these be taken alongside meds?
Probably safe but...: There's no research on this but it's probably safe to take these together, in fact I'd expect a synergistic benefit. SAMe appears to increase serotonin levels; 5-HTP does that too so theoretically one might raise serotonin too much, but this is unlikely unless very high doses are taken. I would not start both together but take one for at least 3 weeks, then add the other, starting with low doses. ...Read more
Not so simple: Stimulating different 5ht receptors will have different effects. 5ht1a receptors will alleviate depression and anxiety. 5ht2a and c may induce anxiety. 5-htp stimulates all those receptors. Regardless, I agree that it's pointless to take 5-htp at all. It is unlikely to treat depression or anxiety any better than a sugar pill. Serotonin isn't the only answer and it's an incomplete one at that. ...Read more
Natural supplaments like sam-e, 5-htp, st johns wort are good for depress, anx & mood. Can all be taken, or just 1 or 2? I'm not on prescrip meds.
Perhaps but caution: Each of these has been shown to work as well as prescription antidepressants, but just as I would not start someone on 3 meds at the same time I would not start all of these at once; it will probably not be necessary and you could wind up with too much serotonin, which can be toxic. My favorite of these is 5-htp, usually 200-300 mg, esp. Beneficial if you have insomnia &/or anxiety. See my comment. ...Read more
Can I try 5 HTP in morning for depression if I take a 50mg of Tramadol in early afternoon? Thank you.
No! - Advise against: There's a serious interaction of increased risk of serotonin syndrome and that's not a good thing. "Trying" to find ways to feel better is a wonderful idea. But the ways that involve powerful chemicals are not for D.I.Y. (I'm not comfortable even when pros do it.) Search for changes in daily/social routines, scenes. Consider a new leisure activity, etc. Therapy support can really help. Be careful! ...Read more
I am having hormone testing done tomorrow to assess my pituitary function. Can 5 htp and sam-e interfere with the results? I forgot to tell my endo.
Pituitary: 5htp help the body produce more seratonin. This is a neurotransmitter in the brain and is not produced from the pituitary. Most of our seratonin is made in the gut and the remainder synthesized in the neurons of the central nervous system. Sam-e is a methyl doner to the system and should not interfere with your testing. ...Read more

Does 5-htp help fibromyelgia patients? If so, how does it help? I'm having a hard time finding something that helps me. All other meds I've been on I get bad side effects or depression.
Fibromyalgia, sometimes is not a simple disease to treat, a lot of excersice could help, the more exercise the better it works. 5 htp is an over the counter food product, not a medication, that like many claim results in many areas, depresion, fibromyalgia and many other. I am not an expert on these products and believe that fibromyalgia is a medical condition that requieres medical care.
If none of the medication worked, increse exercise progresively until control, try yoga and thai chi. ...Read more
Probably not: This has been studied, and 5-htp, the precursor for serotonin, is sold in healthfood stores for this purpose. The idea is to flood the body and brain with precursor to increase serotonin (or with tyrosine, norepinephrine), having the same effect as getting an antidepressant. Problem is, you flood the whole body, not just specific parts of the brain, so lots of se not much specific benefits. ...Read more
What is your experience with patients with mild/moderate depression using 5-htp for treatment? I am taking 100mg & plan to slowly increase to 200mg
