Salt Cravings In Children
I am craving salt. I was actually eating a packet of it today while at work. What could cause this?
Lots of Reasons: Cravings, especially for minerals, are not completely understood. There is a prevailing theory that cravings for things like salt may indicate a deficiency in trace minerals (like manganese or selenium) which are found in salt deposits. Cravings are also sometimes associated with anemia or low blood counts. Or it could mean something as simple as you like the taste of salt... ...Read more

I have been craving salt quite a bit lately. I believe that my sodium level is normal, but have had these cravings for about the last 6-8 weeks?
Hctz (hydrochlorothiazide) and sodium:
Hctz (hydrochlorothiazide) by its mechanism rids the body of sodium and water and reduces blood pressure in the process.
If the craving is really bothersome, check with your doctor and check a sodium level. Its rare, but sometimes hctz (hydrochlorothiazide) can lower your sodium levels too much. ...Read more

Why do I crave salt excessively? I've read among other diagnosis that craving salt is a symptom of addisons disease?
Possibly: Although salt craving is a symptom of addisons disease, most people who crave salt do not have this disorder, as it is very rare. Major symptoms of addisons also include loss of appetite, nausea, weight loss, lightheadedness when standing due to low blood pressure, skin darkening. If addisons disease is suspected, the diagnosis should be confirmed by an endocrinologist before starting medication. ...Read more

Short teenage girl 104 lbs, just told by director to lose as much weight as possible in next month. Asian american, cravings salt+sugar. Please help.?
104 lb sounds ok: We don't tell 104 lb teen girls to lose weight unless there is a very special reason. For an average-height girl, all the way down to a short girl of 4' 10" or 4' 11", 104 lb is a normal weight. For short girls just under 5 feet tall, 95-105 lb should be fine. Also, if a girl is still growing taller, she can keep her current weight steady and just grow into her weight (instead of losing weight). ...Read more

I excessively crave chocolate & salt (not together) all the time. Cravings got worse during my last pregnancy. Possible dx?
I have been craving salt so much for the past three days and it feels like the only way to satisfy it is to sprinkle salt on my tongue. Why?
Several issues maybe: Salt craving can sometimes be caused by a serious underlying medical condition, such as Addison's disease (adrenal insufficiency) or Bartter syndrome (a serious underlying kidney disorder). More common causes may be form lack of sodium as acquired through heavy seating periods or dehydration, causing salt loss in your system, etc. Seek medical help as increased salt may lead to high BP too. ...Read more
Why do I get such a craving for salt? Is it cause I sweat frequently and easily? I don't drink enough water so wouldn't need for salt lower then?
Body built from salt: Water, some routinely measured concentrations (critical for health & life) in the water outside cells are salt concentrations: e.g. Na, K, Ca Cl, etc. Body regulation of salt concentrations more critical to function & life the body water volume which is more easily adapted to. Likely the "craving" is an appropriate homeostatic response; yes sweating ↑es salt loss & need. ...Read more

I am wondering if craving salt, feeling nauseous, & having difficulty concentrating can be due to extremely low iron.?
Craving of salt: Usually means your serum sodium level is low. Hyponatremia (low sodium) can cause cognitive impairment, confusion and even seizures if low enough. I'd have this checked right away, along with your iron, CBC and ferritin. Low iron will cause restless legs, fatigue and result in problems with delivery of Oxygen to the tissues if low enough. ...Read more

I've been craving salt a lot lately, I literally eat spoonfuls of salt, is this linked to graves' disease? Or are there other reasons?
Adrenal insufficient: Salt craving can be a symptom of adrenal insufficiency. The most common cause of this is autoimmune related, which is what causes graves disease. You are therefore at a higher risk for developing this disorder. Graves disease by itself should not cause you to crave salt. ...Read more

Constipation: Yes there are liquid forms of both. Check with your local pharmacist. The more important question is why a child would need to take such a laxative or stool softener? These are safe to use in children but the underlying cause of chronic constipation in a child requires evaluation by a doctor. The most common cause is lack of fluids and fiber deficient diet. Discuss with a pediatrician. ...Read more
Approved for Adults: Use of ES baths;FDA approved adults. Nighttime leg pains should be evaluated to exclude treatable conditions. I'm craving for salt and my legs get hot at night, I have low cortisol level n have been on medication for nine months why?
Salt craving: Your salt craving is natural for cortisol deficiency. Cortisol replacement is essential and it must be adequate. The med used has to have salt retaining actions. Some require a second med, such as fludrocortisone. Rediscuss with your doc the adequacy of your med. Ask for blood testing to check sodium and potassium levels. Hot legs require doc evaluation too. Suggests nerve problem. ...Read more

I have swelling in both of my arms only when I sleep. Sometimes looks ready to pop. Also unusual salt craving and thirst. Any help?
Swelling: Swelling of both arms only during sleep would be a most unusual symptom. If fluid retention from excessive salt intake was the problem, puffiness would be noticeable in other Areas of the body such as fingers, feet, ankles, around the eyes before arm swelling would occur unless you wear constricting garments restricting blood flow back up your arms. Have your physician examine you as needed. ...Read more

My mom has all symptoms of addisons except salt cravings. Blood work came back negative for that and hashimoto. Any ideas? Could it be auto Immune?
Symptoms in medicine: Hi. Here's a very well time tested and proven philosophy of medicine: there is no symptom specific to any single disease, and no disease specific to any single symptom. So when you say someone has symptoms of an incredibly rare disease (e.g., Addison's) bear in mind those same symptoms can be seen WITHOUT that disease, with some other disease, or with no identifiable disease. Good luck to your Mom ...Read more
On 5mg prednisone/day. Tapering 1mg/month. Normal 2get low bp, very lightheaded, bad salt, h20 cravings? Loading salt &h20 helps. My MD didn't seem concerned.
Prednisone taper: Your experience indicates partial deficiency of cortisol and other adrenal cortex hormones. Your own adrenal cortex cortisol production is not yet sufficient. There is risk. You can cope while well with extra salt and water, but your "stress production" of cortisol is impaired and will remain impaired for weeks. BP can be lower, and glucose can be lower while fasting, particularly when stressed ...Read more
Acth test normal. Why did I get spacy, confused, blurry vision, salt cravings w/prednisone taper from 6 to 5 mg. Sx improved w/increasing salt, h20.?
Wrong test: Hi. Neither measuring ACTH nor doing an ACTH stimulation test is a test for adrenal sufficiency during a prednisone taper (I'm not sure what you're referring to by "ACTH test"). In no case would the pred taper make you mineralocorticoid (aldosterone-the salt hormone) deficient. If your taper is going too fast based on clinical grounds, it has to be slowed down - there are no lab tests for that. ...Read more
