If Paxil (paroxetine) helps you without causing side effects that creat greater problems, don't worry about potency. Takeit ant let it help. If it is causing problems tell your dr. Team efforts work when the players share information.
Also remember that ssris are not the only anti-depressants. Maybe you need something elswe. Consider reevaluating. ...Read more
I have 2 stents in LAD artery...is Prozac (fluoxetine) a safe ssri due to its qt prolongation or is it to risky?
OTc prolongation: Likely your Prosac will have no real effect on your cardiac conduction, as long as QTc measures under 499 msec, but here is the key issue. Huge numbers of prescription meds have potential to prolong QT interval, especially opioids, but also entire class of SSRI's and SSNRI's. Will refer your question also to cardiology, as they can expand on my comments. ...Read more
Is long-term use of SSRI's safe? I have been on SSRI's for 10 years. I trusted my Dr. Who told me it was safe and easy to stop. Was I lied to? Scared
Long term SSRIs: Many patients are on SSRIs for many many years and have been tolerating, so it could be safe. The question you may wanna ask is whether you need them! It depends on what the indication was in the first place. The most common one is depression and usually we prescribe them for about 6 months then reevaluate. If the depression is resolved and stresses are gone, then we give it a try and taper off. ...Read more
Typically, yes: If you continue to benefit from the SSRI and are not having side effects, I would consider it safe to continue, even for 20 or 30 years. If you are starting to wonder whether it is still helping, however, I would encourage you to discuss that with your personal physician. In my experience, there is nothing to indicate that SSRI's play a role in memory loss. ...Read more
How is cyproheptadine and an SSRI safe to use together? Don't they both affect the serotonin transmitter? But often prescribed together by docs. Thx
Cyproheptadine blocks receptors for serotonin, histamine, and acetylcholine. In my experience it is THE BEST treatment for akathisia.
There are a handful of very old small studies suggesting antidepressant benefit. But it may worsen anxiety in some patients.
It has been suggested as a way to block SSRI-induced sexual side effects.
I almost never meet anyone whose doc prescribes it w/ SSRI meds. ...Read more

I have convulsion an tremor evryday and I think my ssri is causing this I was prescribed depakote for migraine yesterday how can I come off ssri safe?
You can taper yourself: In order to come off of your antidepressants safely, you need to very slowly taper off of it. I would recommend taking the medication at 3/4 dosage for one week, then at 1/2 dosage for another week, and then finally at 1/4 dosage for another week, at which point you can stop the medication safely. At any point if you start feeling withdrawal symptoms you should bump to next highest dose. ...Read more

No easy answer: The FDA’s stance since 2011 is that SSRIs are associated with a condition called PPHN. It’s very rare, but severe. On the other hand, depression during pregnancy may be more mild, but it may also be worse and associated with suicidal tendencies, which is why the decision to continue or stop a SSRI is a tough one that needs to be weighed by an expecting mother with guidance from her doctor ...Read more

Which supplement/herb/vitamin can help improve mental focus, memory, learning etc and is safe to take with ssris? And which should I stay away from?
Follow up question-.I use 60 cymbalta (duloxetine) and 12.5 metropolol what should I be watching for--low /highiblood pressure/heart rate? Would an ssri be safer?
Safe combination: This is a safe combination of medications your pulse will be little slower and your BP a little lower, but not much. Otherwise this is a very good combination when the metoprolol is at low dose. At high doses of metoprolol some people experience pleasant hallucinations of beautifully colored small animals. There is no negative emotional reactions to these. It would be unusual to occur @ this dose. ...Read more
