Dr. Alan Zunamon answered:

What is the risk of a blood clot after gallbladder surgery in a patient with high blood pressure and tachycardia?

It depends

Gall_bladder
The high blood pressure and tachycardia(rapid heart rate)are common after surgery due to stress and not necessarily indicators or causes of a blood clot. However, some people do in fact develop a blood clot after surgery and a rapid heart rate might be a sign warranting further evaluation.

Hypertension is often genetic and it is not unusual to develop it under the age of 30. But there are other factors that should be considered. Some kidney diseases can cause blood clots and high blood pressure (lupus is one). Some medications can do the same (oral contraceptives). There are other factors (alcohol, obesity, adrenal disease) and medications that can increase BP without causing clots.

Dr. Dan E. Fisher answered:

Does a decongestant or phenylephrine cause high / low blood pressure?

High BP

Physical_exam
phenylephrine and decongestants in general stimulate receptors that constrict blood vessels ( that is how they decongest) and raise HR. These combined effects raise BP.

Antihistamines

Allergists
Any over the counter antihistamine without a decongestant is safe with high blood pressure. Antihistamines do not raise blood pressure. Advise 2nd generation, minimally sedating antihistamine such as Zyrtec, Allegra, Claritin (listed in order of descending histamine blocking effect). Less expensive generic equivalents are available. How much alcohol is safe to have if you are on medication for high blood pressure and angina?

Be temperate

High_blood_pressure
Alcohol can interfere with many prescription medications (ask your doctor, it depends on which medicines you are taking). However, if used in moderation (up to 3 - 5 drinks/week), there isn't harm, and actually there may be a slight health benefit! Be temperate.
