A little concerning: More information needed but if a fetal pole is present and can be measured, then a fetal heart beat should seen. If there is just a gestational sac with no fetal pole, then the size of the gestational sac matters. A gestational sac that measures 18mm should have fetus with a heartbeat and if not, then a miscarriage is most probable. Good luck. ...Read more

5w pregnant, had ultrasound yesterday which showed irregular shaped sac, fetal pole seen but no cardiac activity. Put on cyclogest (progesterone). What are my chances?

Findings: It might be early enough to still see a viable pregnancy. I would ask your doctor to get two quantative hcg levels 48 hours apart. If dropping then this isn't a viable pregnancy. ...Read more

Ultrasound at 6weeks 2days pregnant shows gestational sac, yolk sac, fetal pole n heartbeat (133bpm). What are the chances of miscarriage after this?

Ultrasound at 6weeks 2days pregnant shows gestational sac, yolk sac, fetal pole n heartbeat (133bpm). What are the chances of miscarriage after this?

Risk is decreased: The fact the fetal pole has a heartbeat is very good and encouraging. However, the risk of miscarriage is still present until 12-13 weeks. That is why most celebrities do not release statements about pregnancy, due to the fact that miscarriage can happen.
After this time, with a normal fetal heartbeat and placenta, the risk of miscarriage drastically decreases. ...Read more

About 6 weeks pregnant. Spotting/bleeding for 2 weeks. No cramping. Hcg levels over 5000. Sac & fetal pole seen. No HB. Is this normal?

It is normal: It is normal to have mold spotting during first trimester. Bed rest is recommended for some time. If it is associated with pain or cramping or excess bleeding do not wait to see your obstetrician for comprehensive evaluation. ...Read more

There was a little sac and fetal pole but no heartbeat yet. Possibly too early they think I'm less than 6 weeks. Feeling sick has stopped for 2 days.

No heart beat on U/S: Seeing a sac with fetal pole at 6 weeks is normal and I would have expected cardiac activity. Possibly it's somewhat delayed. Recheck in 2 weeks, no activity would be an ominous sign. ...Read more

I am 5weeks and 1day, did an ultrasound and they couldn't find the yolk sac or fetal pole. Is this a problem?

I am 5weeks and 1day, did an ultrasound and they couldn't find the yolk sac or fetal pole. Is this a problem?

Possibly: It may be too early to detect those structures. Your doctor may wait to see if the pregnancy progresses, do serum beta HCG blood test, or ask for repeat ultrasound in 4 to 6 days, depending on your symptoms. ...Read more

I done sonar today I though I was 7 wk as my last menstrual day 13/3 dr said 6 wk we saw sac and fetal pole by vaginal sonar is that normal?

I done sonar today I though I was 7 wk as my last menstrual day 13/3 dr said 6 wk we saw sac and fetal pole by vaginal sonar is that normal?

Yes: Yes, it is normal to see both the gestational sac and the fetal pole by approximately 6 weeks. It is not uncommon for dates to be off by a week or so between your calculation and the ultrasound evidence. This does not really cause any harm to you or the baby. You should continue to have periodic ultrasounds to assess the growth and the dating still may fluctuate a little. Don't worry! ...Read more

Sac seen, msd-13mm -6weeks but my LMP is 8weeks 2 days--no yolk sac seen-fetal pole not visualized at the time of scan. Sac partially separated 8*5mm?

Sac seen, msd-13mm -6weeks but my LMP is 8weeks 2 days--no yolk sac seen-fetal pole not visualized at the time of scan. Sac partially separated 8*5mm?

Dates off?: May be off on dates, don't see fetal pole until sac at least 18 mm on transvaginal scan. It may work out and your just not where you thought or the pregnancy may not be viable low probality but a pregnancy in the tube can create a pseudo-sac but you would likely be in pain. If non viable your chances of having a normal preg. Next time are not lower; go to the follow up, sorry, tough situation. ...Read more

Prog level 19 (down from 31 at week 4) and 58000 hCG at 7w. Yolk sac and fetal pole found on u/s, no heartbeat. Sac measures just under 6w. Viable?

Prog level 19 (down from 31 at week 4) and 58000 hCG at 7w. Yolk sac and fetal pole found on u/s, no heartbeat. Sac measures just under 6w. Viable?

Early pregnancy: Early pregnancy can be a confusing time. That your Progesterone fell is not a good sign. Nor is the u/s finding of a fetal pole and yolk sac, but no fetal heart beat. Sac size doesn't really help. I would be cautious and repeat the ultrasound in one week's time. If there is still no fetal heart beat, it isn't a viable pregnancy. ...Read more

Ultrasound today show sac and fetal pole 5wks/5days no heartbeat yet but hCG last week went from 42, 000 to 40, 000 saw blood in ultrasound misscarry?

Ultrasound today show sac and fetal pole 5wks/5days no heartbeat yet but hCG last week went from 42, 000 to 40, 000 saw blood in ultrasound misscarry?

Probable: It's hard to say without looking at all the pictures, but if you have an intrauterine pregnancy and the HCG is not increasing, it's not a good sign. If the embryo is over 5 mm and no heart beat, then it is consistent with a demise. ...Read more

U/s at possibly 7w5d gestational sac and fetal pole measuring at 6w1d but no yolk sac or heartbeat. Miscarriage or miscalculation?

Dates could be off: I would not expect to see definite fetal heart activity at 6wk 1dy. A repeat ultrasound in one week will resolve the question. If the pregnancy is viable there should be appropriate interval growth and definite fetal heart activity. If not, then there had been an early fetal demise. In cases of blighted ovum a fetal pole does not develop. ...Read more

First ultrasound 6w 3d only found gestational sac & yolk sac no fetal pole. Went after 2 weeks found same result but the sac measured 7w 6d miscarry?

Discuss with doctor: It would not be appropriate for us to make a definitive statement without all the information. I will say that a fetus should be visible in a gestational sac 7-8 weeks size. Ask your doctor if you have a blighted ovum. A blighted ovum is where the baby never forms. This can be treated with medication of a surgery called a D and C ...Read more

We had IVF with PGS and 5d blastocyst. When our embryo was 6w4d, we saw 13mm empty GS w/o yolk sac and fetal pole. HCG doubling. How likely is it BO?

We had IVF with PGS and 5d blastocyst. When our embryo was 6w4d, we saw 13mm empty GS w/o yolk sac and fetal pole. HCG doubling. How likely is it BO?

May be too early...: .... to tell how well your early pregnancy is going. Generally, with a singleton non-IVF intrauterine pregnancy, the embryonic developmental milestones are known and there are sonographic criteria to diagnose a failed or failing pregnancy that may not apply to all IVF pregnancies. Usually, diagnosis of a failed pregnancy will be made if the mean gestational sac diam. Is >25 mm and no embryo is seen ...Read more

Gestational sac of 9mm with no yolk sac and fetal pole in six weeks with irregular periods means?

May be normal: 9mm gs is still too small to see pole or yolk sac. Irreg menses makes it more difficult to verify gest age at this time. Recommend to follow serial bhcg levels or wait to repeat sono in a couple of weeks if no pain or bleeding. ...Read more

U/s at possibly 7w5d gestational sac and fetal pole measuring at 6w1d but no yolk sac or heartbeat. Miscarriage or miscalculation? Hcg dropped

Obgyn evaluation: Your Obgyn will need to interpret the sonogram for you. We can not make a specific diagnosis such as this on Healthtap. In general if a fetal pole is seen in a gestational sac that large and there is no heartbeat then this would indicate a miscarriage. Please follow up with your Obgyn to discuss your specific case. ...Read more
