Rusty Nail Cut Tetanus
I got a little cut on a rusty nail on my hand. It bled a little. I cleaned it immediately. What are the chances of tetanus? What should I watch for?
Review your shots: Tetanus is a germ that exists all around us. It's spores spread the germs and can enter any break in the skin. The germ spores enter the wound and fester into an infection. Over time the germs begin to make a neurotoxin that enters the blood and causes the symptoms of tetanus. If you have had a booster shot within 10 yrs you are not at risk. If you wait until symptoms start, there is a risk of death. ...Read more
Did some yard work, and I picked up a rusty can. But on top of my finger I had a cut from biting my nail. Can I get tetanus from this?
How long can I wait before getting a tetanus shot after stepping on a nail? It wasn't clean, but was not rusty. My foot has been washed out. Deep cut
I had a Dtap shot after I had a baby 5yrs ago. And boosters before that. Yesterday I cut myself on a rusty nail, drew a little blood. Chances of Tetanus?
Is tDap a tetanus shot? I got a Tdap shot 5years ago, And previous boosters before that (I'm 22) I cut myself with a rusty nail 3days ago. Am I covered?
You're Covered, Dude: Tdap 5yrs ago is fine and should last 10 unless you get a so-called tetanus-prone wound (crush injury, contaminated injury, puncture wound, etc), then at 5 years is the time to get the booster. A rusty nail isn't too much to worry about. It's what might be on that nail that could cause tetanus (spores from the soil) or infection (bacteria from soil or your shoe if it penetrated into your foot). ...Read more
Got stuck in the fore arm with a rusty nail, last tetanus shot 5-6 yrs ago, arm hurts /swollan/redish around cut. Can I wait till morning to see how i?
See below.: Tetanus shot is probably good although would certainly not hurt to get another. Major concern is acute infection with much more common organisms such as staph and strep. Anytime there is rapidly expanding or advancing redness, pain, swelling and / or fever you need to see a doc ASAP to be treated or closely monitored. If this is not the case then waiting a few hours to start treatment is OK. ...Read more
It is still possible: Stop bleeding by applying pressure. Rinse wound w clean water. Clean surrounding skin w soap & water on wash cloth. Apply antibiotic ointment. Initially cover w bandage until some healing has occurred. Change bandage when soiled/ wet or at least daily. Need tetanus shot if you haven't had one in last 10 years, don't know when you last had one. ...Read more

My daughter cut her hand on a rusty bin that held soil. She hasn’t been vaccinated for tetanus in 9 or 10 years. Cuts were shallow. What should I do?
Any wound a problem: Tetanus spores from the dirt can get into any break in your skin and potentially germinate. Over time the growing germs may elaborate the tetanus toxin and give you tetanus. The rusty nail scene is the one most talked about, but any dirty wound in a susceptable person can be a source. ...Read more
I stepped on a nail last night. It wasn't rusty. It only went in an inch or two. I cleaned it right after. Could I have tetanus?
Tetanus: Tetanus shots are recommended every 10yrs. However, I usually recommend getting one, with an injury, if it's been more than 5yrs. With the new recommendations to get a Tdap, (tetanus, diphtheria AND pertussis) it might be the perfect opportunity to protect you and unimmunized infants, from whooping cough. This replaces the old Td. ...Read more
Depends: If you have not received a booster within 10 years you should. If is more than 5 but less than 10, it wouldn't hurt & would improve your protection so you wouldn't need it again soon. De sure to clean the wound and monitor it for swelling, redness or discharge. There are other germs that can cause problems. ...Read more
Have it evaluated: Such injuries can potentially be dangerous as one may develop tetanus, or a number of other types of deep infections. If the wound was deep enough they may lead to bone infections. Have the wound properly evaluated and treated to avoid preventable complications. ...Read more
Are tetanus shots 100% affective even if the last one was 3 years ago and you stood on a rusty nail (which didn't bleed)?
Not 100%: No vaccine by itself is 100%, but the tetanus vaccine is one of the most effective shots we give. If you had one 3 years ago, you should be well protected for tetanus. If you are freaking out though, it does not hurt you in any way to get a booster at 3 years to be maximally sure, but it is probably overkill. Keep the wound clean and monitor closely. ...Read more
I just scrtached myself with a rusty nail, and I washed it. I had a tetanus shot just over a year ago. Should I be worried?
Not necessarily: Tetanus should not be an issue. A localized bacterial infection might be if the area is not tended to but it sounds like you are doing the right stuff. Any evidence of increasing redness, swelling or oozing at the site should be evaluated. ...Read more
I have had a tetanus shot a year earlier and just stepped on a rusty nail and it went in kinda deep will I need another one?
No: You are protected for a 10 year period from the point of the booster. You do need to keep the would clean and watch that it heals. The shot does not protect you from infection by other germs. ...Read more
