Rpr (Overview)

Rapid plasma reagin (rpr) is a blood test that looks for non-specific antibodies that may indicate that the organism (treponema pallidum) that causes syphilis is present. The term "reagin" means that this test does not look for antibodies against the actual bacterium, but rather for antibodies against substances released by cells when they are damaged. From "redbook".

After a 8 year exposure and a 12 month exposure I just got tested for std rpr and hiv duo @ 1 3 6 12 mos and fta abs at 12 mos is it conclusive?

No syphilis or HIV: For sure you don't have HIV or syphilis, no worries. You have been seriously over tested. The HIV duo test is conclusive any time 4 weeks or more after exposure, and the RPR syphilis at any time 6 weeks or more. YOu didn't need an FTA-ABS test, and all HIV tests beyond for weeks were wasted money. You also should have urine or vaginal swab tests for chlamydia and gonorrhea. ...Read more

False RPR test what cause them?

Syphilis Testing: I am very curious by your question. It is difficult to have a false positive for syphilis so I would make sure that you are getting the right information and that a follow up test is scheduled. Latent syphilis can have deadly consequences so making sure you are un-infected is paramount.

Asked yesterday but question was not really answered. Which comes positive first for syphilis RPR or cia?

CIA?: An appropriate syphilis test involves two stages: the RPR is done FIRST- if positive, a confirmatory test such as an "FTA-ABS' or an "EIA for TPA" must be done. The 2-stage test is more cost effective and decreases the number of 'false positive' results. Discuss this important question further with your ordering doctor. ...Read more

Untreated: I am sorry to report but you still have syphilis. You need a spinal tap and better, more effective IV treatment for at least ten consecutive days. Your treatment was ineffective and not the correct treatment. Your spinal fluid must be tested for syphilis and after the correct treatment followed repeatedly until you are negative. You could die if this is not properly treated. ...Read more

Hi. My friend had RPR reactive, titre 1:8 TPPA detected in Feb 2016. Undergo 1 dose of Pen G, then proceed with Doxy 400mg BD x 2 weeks. One month and?

Syphilis treatment: This was atypical treatment; usually the single shot of long-acting penicillin is sufficient. Why the doxycycline? These treatments made him non-infectious, i.e. sex partners no longer at risk. But if syphilis had been present longer than a year, he also should have had a spinal tap to check for asymptomatic neurosyphilis. Still needs follow-up RPRs, which should now be 1:2 or lower. ...Read more
