Yes: The tongue has taste buds or papillae that are used to sense sweet, sour, salt bitter and umami. The ones in the back or base of the tongue are called circumvallate or vallate papillae and are responsible for bitter.
White spots under tongue, rough sore spots under tongue & back sides of tongue also on creases between cheek &gum. Very painful when I bit my cheek?

I have a white, rough area on my tongue that sometimes feels as if it was burned. The area has grown over the past few months.?
See an Oral Surgeon: You should see an oral surgeon to evaluate that area on your tongue. It might be something benign that does not need treatment or it might require a biopsy to determine exactly what it is. Even benign lesions can lead to more serious lesions and therefore warrants a definitive diagnosis as soon as possible.See 1 more doctor answer

Chances of developing oral cancer by age 25? Noticed a rough patch on my tongue But ive been told that cancer is extremely rare in 25 year olds
You're right: It is rare. But never impossible. My previous advice still stands... have it examined. You want reassurance that your lesion is nothing to worry about, and that really can't be done over the internet. If it is there more than three weeks, have it examined by an oral surgeon.See 2 more doctor answers
I just noticed a rough patch on my tongue that seems extra sensitive. Can this be oral cancer? I've smoked on and off for 8 years but im also only 25
I wrongly explained a question. I noticed a rough patch on my tongue but its not visible it just feels a bit rougher. No lesion. Can this be oral cancer?
Get It Checked: Some oral cancers and pre-cancers are difficult to see. They are especially hard to see in your own mouth. Your dentist will have better lighting and be able to examine your mouth. Don't hesitate. Most oral cancers can easily be treated, when detected early. They can be deadly, if left too long.See 2 more doctor answers
