Hair Transplant (Definition)

A hair transplant is the only permanent way to restore youthful hair growth to an area affected by hair loss due to thinning or balding. When performed carefully and artistically, a hair transplant is a comfortable outpatient procedure that can yield a 100% natural-looking restoration of living and growing hair--restoring a hairline or coverage at the top of the scalp. A hair transplant involves the harvesting and redistribution of permanent hair follicles from the sides and the back of the scalp into the areas of hair loss using as little as a single hair follicle at a time. FUE, or follicular unit extraction, is the minimally-invasive method of hair follicle harvesting which leaves no linear scar in the back of the scalp. Hair transplantation can be a life-changing procedure for men and women detrimentally affected by hair loss because a fuller head of hair makes people look ...Read more

How long one should wait before shaving off the hair of a newborn after his birth?

How long one should wait before shaving off the hair of a newborn after his birth?

At least few months: I expect this is for a cultural reason. I have many asian and hispanic families that shave heads after a few months in a ritualistic way, and it's fine. However, you don't want to shave while the hair is the fine, newborn hair. If you don't have to though, i wouldn't. Hair will grow in just fine no matter what you do, so it's better to let nature take it's course. ...Read more

What does a patient go through before having a bone marrow transplant. And after the transplant?

It's complicated.: There are different protoclos but generally it starts with drugs to supress or destroy recipient bone marrow, and drugs to block the immune system so the graft can "take". Blood counts are low, and infections occur, transfusions needed. Once engrafted, worry is graft vs host disease and powerful immunosupressive drugs are given to prevent or treat gvhd. Sites are lung, liver, skin, GI tract. ...Read more

Eyebrow shaved by razor to stitch wound 5 months ago and the hair grow but not thick like before , how long shall I wait for complete grow ?

Eyebrow hair: growth is often reduced after shaving the hair for procedures like the one you had. Most likely, the brow hair won't naturally grow any more than has already taken place. You can try a product called Latisse (bimatoprost) (I have no financial interest in this). This is usually used to help with eyelash growth but can also promote your eyebrow hair to get thicker as well. ...Read more

Will Perming your hair twice before a hair strand test for alcohol remove etg? I have had 2/3 binges over 3 months.

I wouldn't: "depend" upon it!!! The Perm may break the sulfhydryl bonds (Sulphur containing bonds holding the protein "together" ((THUS the "rotten egg" smell when the Perm is happeninv) but there is no reason to expect the follicles will "loose" alcohol/drug deposits! Best bet......stop the binges..admit you have a problem..and get help! ...Read more

How long will I be in the hospital after a blood and bone marrow transplant?

How long will I be in the hospital after a blood and bone marrow transplant?

This varies: With many of the peripheral blood stem cell transplants, some programs do the whole procedure as an outpatient, keeping the patient close to the center because they will need daily followup for awhile. Other programs have the patients in hospital for about 2 weeks. Patients with other serious problems may end up staying for longer times...4-6 weeks, but this is not as common as it used to be. ...Read more

Transplant (Definition)

In medicine: a transfer from one body or body part to another of an organ (liver, heart, lung, kidney, pancreas bowel) or tissue (hand, face, hair). The immune system fights foreign invaders (like infections) so it will reject transplants from other people (allotransplants) because they look like infections.
