Are HIV RNA and HIV PCR the same tests? How soon after potential exposure can you get a conclusive result?
HIV viral load tests: The short answer is 'yes' -since HIV-1 is an RNA virus. We quantify how much virus is there per drop of blood by using PCR technology (polymerase chain reaction if you must know). These days, the tests are extremely good -so after an exposure, this kind of testing could pick up positive results within 2 or 3 weeks. If you think you've been exposed, see an ID doc immediately-they could help w/ meds ...Read more

How conclusive is HIV RNA test at 23 day mark? Have to wait with anxiety till I get test again. ARS at 6 weeks freaking me out. Thanks in adv
Welcome to HealthTap.
You can relax. Virtually all persons with HIV have positive RNA or DNA tests by 23 days. You don't need to wait 6 wk for final testing. Ask your doctor or clinic about a DUO or "4th generation" test, for which the result is conclusive 4 weeks or more after exposure. I might have more advice if you'd like to say more about your exposure and any symptoms you may have. ...Read more
Handjob at massage parlor. Tested for HIV with 4th gen test at 4 and 6 weeks both neg. Also had a negative HIV RNA at 20 days. Are these conclusive?
HIV: HIV is transmissible through body fluids. Unless you had an open sore on your penis and the massager who gave you the "hand job" had an open sore, that were in contact, there is minimal to almost no chance you contracted hiv from that encounter. The tests are good, but remember any HIV exposure can take several weeks to seroconvert to a positive blood test. ...Read more
Hi. How accurate/conclusive is a negative result of HIV RNA (early detection test) taken 4 weeks post exposure? My exposure was pretty low risk as told to me by my doctors. I will obviously be taking other follow up tests as time goes by. Thank you.
Almost 100%: Your "obviously" comment is based on a misconception. RNA testing alone is nearly 100% accurate at 4 weeks. If you also have (or had) a negative antibody test, the results are (or will be) conclusive. The duo test (antibody/antigen) or RNA plus an antibody test are 100% conlcusve at 4 weeks. Going beyond 4 weeks is needed only for stand-alone antibody tests -- and even then, 6-8 weeks is enough. ...Read more

Hiv rna test result undetected after unprotected blowjob at day17. Test range 40 to 10mil. Is it conclusive? Regular hiv test neg at 15 days. Hiv?
No risk: HIV is rarely transmitted by oral sex. If you were the receiver of the BJ, you can be sure you weren't infected: there are few if any proved cases of oral to genital HIV transmission. Most experts would have recommended against an RNA test in this situation, but the negative result is additional strong evidence you weren't infected. The "regular" test is only slightly reassuring, 4-6 wk minimum. ...Read more

Retest: I think that today's tests are conclusive at 7 weeks. However, you're also young, you did something risky, and you're going to be anxious unless you retest at 12 weeks. Do it -- not for the science, but for your own peace of mind. And whatever happened, I hope you've got a memory you can both learn from and also cherish -- you gave and received affection. Be safe from now on. Cheers. ...Read more
Is my 8 wks 2 day PCR RNA + 4th Gen test neg conclusive for HIV infec after vagi exp? Or do I need to test after 12 r 13 wks? Thanks for any response
No more HIV testing: The 4th gen blood test (for HIV antibody and p24 antigen) is considered conclusive any time 4 weeks or more after the last possible exposure. The RNA test was superfluous but also confirms you didn't catch HIV. Also, it is extremely rare to catch HIV from a single episode of vaginal sex in the US or western Europe, where HIV is rare even in the most sexually active women. All is well ...Read more

Most people who turn positive would be positive at least borderline by day 14-20. There are uncommon cases of over 1 month to turn positive. NOte that the incidence of this is far lower than the liklihood of someone Totally Lying about What They are Doing! .
