How many days should I stay on ritalin (methylphenidate) before switching to another medication?

May Not Need To: The dosing of a medicine like ritalin, (methylphenidate) and its various, forms, often requires adjtustments and monitoring of response. What are the effects of ritalin (methylphenidate) on a 6 year old with add and when does the medication start working?

What are the effects of ritalin (methylphenidate) on a 6 year old with add and when does the medication start working?

Immediately: Stimulants act by stimulating the cortex in the brain, in add this is like stimulating the brakes in a system. They usually start working short after start. They block the appetite, increase pulse rate and blood pressure and may disrupt sleep, I am not aware of studies that followed people up to adulthood, so we don't how they affect the brain as it develops from childhood to adulthood. ...Read more

When would doctors combine ritalin with strattera (atomoxetine)? If every medication alone didn't show benefits?

If optimal effect is: Not achieved or side effects preclude titrating doses of methylphenidate (ritalin, concerta, focalin) or amphetamine (adderall, vyvanse) to optimal effect, adding a non-stimulant (strattera, intuniv, kapvay) may help. Strattera (atomoxetine) is part of the Prozac molecule ; adds some serotonin effect to your zoloft. Consider one of the other non-stimulants that won't increase risk of "serotonin syndrome". ...Read more

Can drugs like ritalin (methylphenidate) and aderrall (add medication) really help college students get better grades?

Stimulant medication: Ritalin (methylphenidate) and Adderall (dextroamphetamine and racemic amphetamine) (dexamphetamine) are stimulant medications (like caffeine) approved to treat add. They can improve focus and attention in anyone, but have a marked effect for people who have add (attention deficit disorder). Although sometimes "abused" they should not be used unless needed for add symptoms as they may increase heart rate and blood pressure in some people. ...Read more

As a child I was prescribed Ritalin and now that I'm finding it hard to concentrate in nursing school, I think I may need a prescription medication?

Eliminate alternativ: Lack of focus can be triggered by some correctable issues that have nothing in common with ADD. Lack of restorative sleep, erratic nutrition, thyroid disease, other chronic illnesses, etc. If you work on the things that you can fix, and still have a problem, a thorough checkup is needed. It is easy to go online and identify with symptom lists for ADD, it is more appropriate to see a professional. ...Read more

Taking 5mg ritalin (methylphenidate) 2-3 times daily for fatigue. Causing headaches will it stop or is there another stimulant medication I can take?

Taking 5mg ritalin (methylphenidate) 2-3 times daily for fatigue. Causing headaches will it stop or is there another stimulant medication I can take?

Consult your doc: Headaches can be a side effect of stimulant meds, ask your doc about whether this might be reduced if u take it by clock rather than "2-3 x day", or if a slow release form might smooth out the rise and drop in blood levels. If you are missing sleep becaue of the stimulants - this whole approach can backfire - so finding and treating the cause of excess fatigue might be something else to consider. ...Read more

What's the proper way of disposing of Adderal, Ritalin and Strattera (atomoxetine)? I refuse to take anymore of my medication and want to get rid of it all.

What's the proper way of disposing of Adderal, Ritalin and Strattera (atomoxetine)? I refuse to take anymore of my medication and want to get rid of it all.

Pharmacy: The best way is to ask your pharmacy how to dispose of unused medication. The bigger question is why you are refusing to take your medication. If you are having side effects, you may need to talk with your doctor about other options. Just stopping your meds without a plan to address your ADHD in other ways will probably not be successful. Talk with your doctor. ...Read more

How long does ritalin stay in your system after you stop taking the medication? I was put on it for a few days but stopped due to the side effects. I am starting a new job and will be drug tested next week and am worried if I need to tell them or not.

Very short: The half life of Ritalin (methylphenidate) is quite short. If you have stopped taking the drug after a few days, and your test is not for a few more days, chances are you will not test positive. It would be wise, however, to be upfront about any current medications you are taking when you submit your sample. ...Read more

Can you explain to me ritalin crash compared to Vyvanse (lisdexamfetamine) and other ADHD medications?

Can you explain to me ritalin crash compared to Vyvanse (lisdexamfetamine) and other ADHD medications?

There are only two: Stimulants, methylphenidate & Amphetamine. Since 2000, multiple delivery systems of each have been produced. Each differs in onset of action, time of peak clinical effect & duration of action. Longer & more consistent drug delivery gives better symptom control & reduces symptoms of "rebound" ADHD, irritability, emotional lability & the "crash" noted by some teens & adults as the effect wears off ...Read more

Doc can't scribe Ritalin (methylphenidate) for fatigue due to Sarcoidosis anymore. What are some other medication options?

Fatigue: Methylphenidate has been used for the treatment of fatigue in patients with cancer, 4HIV infection, 5and chronic fatigue syndrome.6In an open-label trial, 7 methylphenidate was reported as useful for fatigue associated with sarcoidosis.

Dexmethylphenidate hydrochloride (d-MPH) is the d-threo-methylphenidate hydrochloride isomer of methylphenidate. It is approximately twice as potent as the racemic formulation and appears to have a longer half-life; hence, it can be administered twice daily ...Read more

Tardive Dyskinesia: Tardive dyskinesia is a parkinson's-like movement disorder usually caused by neuroleptics but has been reported to be caused by over 50 meds including prolonged use of adderall and Ritalin (methylphenidate) as well as caffein. TD results from an excessive amount of the brain chemical Dopamine or excessively sensitive receptors for Dopamine. All meds have risks. Can you overcome MPH tachyphylaxis by switching from Ritalin (methylphenidate) to Adderall? Or to another stimulant medication?

Can you overcome MPH tachyphylaxis by switching from Ritalin (methylphenidate) to Adderall? Or to another stimulant medication?

Yes: Based on the pharmacodynamics leading to tachyphylaxis, research into delivery options has found that fine tuning the method of delivery decreases the risk for tachyphylaxis. One formulation that has been consistently superior is Concerta. Some of the generic preparations do not accurately replicate the release dynamics of he brand name so I suggest starting with it. There are also many more optionsask your doctor ...Read more

If ritalin didn't help my ADHD & strattera (atomoxetine) didn't also, which other options do I have if there are no amphetamine medications here?

If ritalin didn't help my ADHD & strattera (atomoxetine) didn't also, which other options do I have if there are no amphetamine medications here?

Non-drug solutions: Medications are not the only solution to adhd, and many people with mild adhd (myself included) manage with making lists and developing habits of checking those lists at specific intervals, and of not trying to carry around more than 2 thoughts at any given time. If vyvanse, (lisdexamfetamine) which is an amphetamine precursor, is not available, am not sure what drug options you have, if doses have been optimal. ...Read more

I put my Zoloft (sertraline) and ritalin and omega 3 tablets in a bag in a portable file box. Can this be hot or bad for medications' effectivity?

May be bad: Remember, meds are designed to melt inside you. That's 37 degrees celsius or 98.6 fahrenheit. I'm not sure how warm it is in lebanon in january, but if your portable file is getting hot, it's not good for your medicines which generally should be stored in a cool, dry place. ...Read more

Can ritalin (methylphenidate) improve rhe side effects of mood stabilers and antideprssant., as I feel tired and unfocused om my bipolar medication.

Sometimes: Sometimes methylphenidate is used in small doses to augment the effect of antidepressants. But in higher doses it can worsen depression or anxiety. A stimulant medication can destabilize bipolar disorder. It's use is, therefore, best left in the hands of an experienced doctor in the appropriate clinical setting. ...Read more

I have been diagnosed with adhd. Used Ritalin la 40 for many years but hate the side effects. Recently started using mentat and it has been helping. Will concerta be better? Is there any medication to eliminate the side effects of these stimulants

WHAT SIDE EFFECTS?: I am not sure what side effects you mean. Ritalin LA and Metadate and Concerta are all similar methylphenidate products. The longer acting ones tend to have fewer side effects and sometime to can mitigate the issue by eating first. If this does not work discuss with your doctor about the side effects and perhaps switch to something different. ...Read more
