How long does ringworm take to heal with prescribed medication? What exactly is ringworm?

Fungal infection: Ringworm is a fungal infection of the skin. If a cream is used that the fungus is susceptible to then on average 2-3 weeks of treatment will "cure" most ringworm. Obviously a larger area or underlying disease like diabetes slows treatment progress as sugar is a good "food". Please treat the area for at least a week after any visible sign of the lesion has disappeared to prevent recurrence. Read more

I have pneumonia. My only symptom was sharp abdominal pain. I read it could be caused by fungus. Could I have gotten it from my rabbit's ringworm?

Unlikely: Abdominal pain can be a presenting symptom of pneumonia, as the process can prevent normal intestinal motility just beneath the breathing muscle (large intestine).Pneumonia is generally viral or bacterial. Fungal pneumonias are rare and usually only affect people with compromised immune systems. The rabbits ringworm would not be the type of fungus that causes pneumonia. Read more

What are the symptoms of ringworm?

Circular dry rash: "ringworm" is really a fungal infection of the skin and has nothing to do with worms. It occurs in humans and animals such as dogs and cats and is usually easy to treat with otc or prescribed anti-fungal ointment. Read more

What are the usualy signs of ringworm, and how does it go away?

Ring-like rash: Ringworm is called this because it classically forms a raised ring of scale and mile redness. Often the center part of the ring is clear, or relatively clear. However, it does't always look this classic. Ringworm needs to be treated with an anti-fungal medicine. Topical or systemic meds can both work. It can be easy to diagnose so if in doubt you should be seen. Read more

5
How does one contract ringworm?

Physical contact: Ringworm is a contagious skin infection that is actually caused by a fungus and not by a worm. It is spread by direct contact with an infected person or animal and has also been known to spread by contact with contaminated personal items like towels and sports equipment. How is ringworm diagnosed? My one year old has a circular rash that looks like it may either be eczema or ringworm.

Ringworm: Often, the diagnosis of ringworm is obvious from its location and appearance. Otherwise, skin scrapings for microscopic examination and a culture of the affected skin can establish the diagnosis of ringworm. If the diagnosis is unclear, a potassium hydroxide (koh) preparation of a skin scraping can be reviewed under the microscope to confirm the diagnosis of a fungal dermatophyte infection. Read more

Are any special tests needed, or can a regular doctor see someone for ringworm of the body?

How do you know if you have the ringworm fungus on you before the rash occurs?

You may not: Ringworm is the description of what a common rash caused by fungus is called because it looks like a red ring with scale and more clear center. Without a rash or some type of visible skin change you likely do not have a fungal infection. Read more

Does itching mean ringworm is healing?

Does itching mean ringworm is healing?

Itching = Healing: When our bodies sustain an injury, the immediate response is inflammation (red, hot, tender swelling). This is the body bringing healing factors to the area and also the veins expand to carry bad stuff away. The nerves in the area respond to this inflammation in varying intensity as things heal from pain to itching and possibly with numbness. This is a normal part of healing. Read more

Is ringworm treatable with natural products such as mangosteen or nutmeg powder?

Tea Tree Oil: I'm not sure about mangosteen or nutmeg powder for ringworm, but tea tree oil has been shown to help cure athlete's foot nearly as well as a prescription cream. You'd want to apply it twice daily for at least 2 weeks and be sure to keep the skin clean and dry.

I would only try this on the body or feet for a few weeks, not the scalp; if not better, you should see your doctor. Read more

How to get treated for a ringworm of the scalp?

Need prescription!: Ringworm of the scalp is more difficult to treat than ringworm on the body. Once ringworm is on the scalp or in a hairline, oral prescription antifungals are required. This is necessary because the fungus recedes into the hair follicle thus topicals cannot reach to treat. Most oral antifungals work better when taken with a meal, esp fatty foods. Antifungal shampoos can help stop it from spreading. Read more

I've been treating ringworm on my chin & it's improving, but I see what looks like "ghosts" or traces of similar patterns elsewhere UNDER the skin?

I've been treating ringworm on my chin & it's improving, but I see what looks like "ghosts" or traces of similar patterns elsewhere UNDER the skin?

Can spread: Ring worm can spread. If you are seeing other areas that look like what was on your chin, best to treat these areas as well (topical antifungal cream?) If you are unsure, best to see healthcare provider as skin lesions really need to be seen/felt and sometimes biopsied to get you the correct diagnosis and treatment. Hope this helps. Best of luck. What are the best treatments for ringworm?

What are the best treatments for ringworm?

OTCs are similar: There are several available--lamisil, lotrimin, tinactin (tolnaftate) etc. Are similar in efficacy. You don't really need strong, just have to be the right medicine. The strength available are appropropriate/adequate to treat commom skin fungal/ringworm infections on skin (not beard/scalp areas). If not better in about 2 wks, consult doc for proper diagnosis/treatment. Good luck. Read more

What cures ringworm?

Antifungal Meds: Without a prescription, I would recommend lamisil, (terbinafine) however, it can still take a week or more of treatment. If that does not work, or it is widespread, you may need prescription medication. Of course, you should be sure that you are treating ringworm and not some other rash or infection. Proper treatment requires a proper diadnosis. Read more

Avoidance: I don't think there are a recreational drugs. Such drugs are dealing with the deeper problem. Millions of people take recreational drugs. That's just to say we all have problems. Positions need to point in the direction of this type of avoidance. We want to solve our problems not avoid them. I'm sorry I can't directly answer your question.
