My sister is a patient of als, she is taking rilutek (riluzole) tablet. Is there any other treatment of this disease?

Unfortunately no: Due to concern regarding glutamate toxicity, other meds have been added on occasion, such as gabapentin, memantine, Lyrica, (pregabalin) but little proof these provide additional value to the riluzole, which remains the main FDA approved chemical. Just a theoretical long-shot, and not researched at all, but the medical food MetanX and vitamin D-3 supplements might be considered. ...Read more

Prescription: Riluzole or Rilutek (riluzole) is available only by prescription, and is only for use in als. It improves quality of life by delaying the need for ventilator support. My mother suffering from asl the doctor prescribed her riluzole. Is there's any medicine coming up for this disease if there's an please where?

Still research: The cure to ALS is still elusive, and other than riluzole, there is no marketed product. Some theoretical benefit to perhaps blocking glutamate, and some doctors add Gabapentin and memantine, but little proof of value. Could consider trying Alpha lipoid acid, phosphatidyl serine, or even n-acetyl cysteine. Would contact major medical school centers such as mayo, johns hopkins to join research. ...Read more

There had been some: Research on lithium but last I checked, it had disappointing results. I am not aware of anything else in the works. My only disclaimer is that if she enrolls in a clinical trial, her treatment will be experiment or she may be in a placebo group. ...Read more

What is best pain medication?

What is best pain medication?

There are none...: Even the strongest opiates only "take the edge off" for people in chronic pain. Meds are only one part of dealing with the pain. A useful tool, but pain is so necessary for survival that we are not "allowed" to monkey with it much. In acute pain, the transition from miserable to less miserable can be great. In chronic pain, it's just part of the plan. ...Read more
