No bulge, No hernia.: The best test for a hernia is a physical examination by an experienced hernia surgeon. Cts or ultrasounds can identify hernias but neither are 100%. The most common symptom associated w/a hernia is a bulge that protrudes w/exertion. Sounds like: You probably have an inguinal (groin) hernia. The discomfort you describe can be due to a hernia. Hernias can slowly grow over time. Possible: Let your doctor examine you , most of umbilical hernias do not need repair ( surgery ) how ever most likely you have incarceration , mental fat tissue got stuck inside , then you may need surgery , then your family doctor will refer you to a surgeon. ...Read more

Two issues: you have a hernia for 15 years. You have a strong fear of surgery. For the fear you should talk to your doctor and get help. This could really hinder your life.
