Hernia vs cyst: Most hernias aren't tender to touch. Those that hurt need to be evaluated immediately, regardless of anatomy. Any hernia can become more prominent w/valsalva maneuver (which increases pressure in belly). Cysts & abscesses won't change in size w/valsalva. Cysts shouldn't hurt unless infected.
