I have right angled glaucoma, can it cause headaches

I have right angled glaucoma, can it cause headaches

Unlikely: You most likely have open angle glaucoma which is a slow, generally asymptomatic disease. Treatment can be highly effective but headaches are not a symptom. You may have other causes for headaches and need to discuss this with your family doctor.

Glaucoma (Definition)

A condition that causes damage to your eye's optic nerve and gets worse over time. It's often linked to a buildup of pressure inside your eye. Without treatment, glaucoma can cause total permanent blindness ...Read more

Right eye open angle glaucoma with moderate field damage and optic atrophy. Does optic atrophy mean end stage glaucoma?

No: Glaucoma is staged by the visual field test. Visual loss that approaches the center of the vision or extensive visual field loss overall makes it advanced. End-stage glaucoma has no useful vision. The optic nerve changes usually precede the visual field changes.

What is open-angle glaucoma?

What is open-angle glaucoma?

Open angle glaucoma: This is the most common type of glaucoma in which the drains of the eye interior gradually become obstructed (like plumbing obstruction in your house) leading to elevation of the interior eye pressure. This squeezes the nerves and blood vessels at the back of the eye causing gradual loss of vision over time. Treatment (drops, laser, surgery) will lower pressure and protect the eye.

Who is at risk for open-angle glaucoma?

Who is at risk for open-angle glaucoma?

Risk factors are...: Family/ethnicity are important. Those at highest risk for open-angle glaucoma have a sibling with glaucoma; or a parent. African-americans and hispanics are at higher risk than caucasians. Asians have a higher risk for angle-closure disease (e.g., chinese); others are at for risk low-pressure glaucoma (japanese.) other risks include a serious eye injury, or long exposure to Prednisone therapy.

How long can open angle glaucoma go untreated?

How long can open angle glaucoma go untreated?

Never good: Unfortunately, undiagnosed glaucomatous disease & failure to adhere to recommended prescribed treatments for those diagnosed are two of the biggest issues of managing an otherwise very treatable & stabilizable Disease. The best advice is to have a comprehensive eye exam before age 40, particularly if you are in a a high risk group.

How is age a factor in controlling open angle glaucoma?

Younger patients: Need more aggressive treatment than older ones. This is because the disease is cumulative in its effect.

What are the most common symptoms of open angle glaucoma?

No symptoms: One of the things about open angle glaucoma is that the peripheral vision loss "sneaks up" on folks. There are no symptoms, and the sign of peripheral vision loss is not noticeable until the vision loss is advanced. If there is a suspicion or family history, have a proper evaluation by an eye doctor.

I've got "open angle glaucoma" what is it? Is it heriditary?

Optic nerve damage: Open angle glaucoma is a group of disorders in which there is characteristic and progressive damage to the optic nerve. This results in loss of peripheral vision and can cause blindness. Glaucoma has numerous causes, some of which are genetic and not all of which are fully understood. While having family members with glaucoma increases your risk of getting glaucoma, it does not guarantee it.

What is the difference between narrow-angle and closed-angle glaucoma?

Little: These are terms used for the type of glaucoma that is caused by anatomical obstruction by the iris of the fluid outflow from the eye. Both terms are commonly used. This causes an acute attack and this is an ophthalmological emergency. You should see your ophthalmologist immediately as treatment is very effective.

How can I cure primary open angle glaucoma naturally by exercise or alternative safety ways please?

How can I cure primary open angle glaucoma naturally by exercise or alternative safety ways please?

Not possible: There are no natural products, no natural treatment, no exercises etc. That will modify glaucoma in any way. There is effective pharmacologic and surgical treatment and you should follow the advice of your ophthalmologist for the preservation of your important vision. Naturopaths and chiropractors have no role to play at all in this condition.

Recently diagnosed w/open angle glaucoma and being treated w/ 1 drop. In general, how long is it before you know if glaucoma is under control?

Recently diagnosed w/open angle glaucoma and being treated w/ 1 drop. In general, how long is it before you know if glaucoma is under control?

Quickly: Presumably you had elevated pressure in your eye. The drop given should lower the pressure within a week. Your ophthalmologist (you are seeing an ophthalmologist for such a diagnosis?) will have you come back soon to see if the eye pressure responded to normal with your drop.

I have open angle glaucoma I have A fresh herb garden was told to be careful on herbs I use. Can you give me a list of herbs to avoid using. Thank you?

I have open angle glaucoma I have A fresh herb garden was told to be careful on herbs I use. Can you give me a list of herbs to avoid using. Thank you?

No problems: While the actual effects of most herbs is dubious, none that I am aware of will have an effect one way or the other on glaucoma. If you are in active treatment with the pressure normalized, and you feel herbs are useful in other regards, then you can use them. You might consider saving that money to make sure you can pay for your anti-glaucoma medication.

What is narrow-angle glaucoma?

What is narrow-angle glaucoma?

Anatomical Proble: Angle closure glaucoma is far less common than open angle glaucoma. The pathology is based on an anatomical narrowing of the drainage site where fluid made inside the eye drains out. Think plumbing: a clogged drain backs up, and in the eye the pressure increases dramatically. Very painful and vision can be lost entirely in a few hours. High risk patients should be treated, but only if high risk.

Can you cure an open angle glaucoma by surgery?

Can you cure an open angle glaucoma by surgery?

Stabilizable: Unfortunately, we don't have a surgical/medical cure for glaucoma. The current treatments are very effective and provide a tremendous stabilizing influence on glaucomatous disease. Glaucoma requires chronic and diligent life long care to assure that visual function remains as high as possible throughout life. I remain optimistic about medical/surgical research on better treatment strategies.

Narrow angle glaucoma---who gets it? What is that?

Narrow angle glaucoma---who gets it? What is that?

Serious eye problem: Angle closure is when the outflow of aqueous humor is completely blocked and the eye pressure builds up to dangerous levels potentially causing blindness sometimes within 24 hours. It is more common in asian and native american populations particularly in alaskan eskimos.
