I just finished a round of rifaximin for SIBO & I am feeling much better. What can I do to prevent SIBO from returning?

Try Diet Changes: Although finding substantial research on the subject does illicit much information, many sources say that you have to change your diet for long term success with SIBO. Tis includes eliminating what the bacteria feed on- most carbohydrates. It is said they do not like insoluble fiber, but everything else they love. What is the success rate for Xifaxan (rifaximin) for a permanent cure of SIBO after one use? I'm reading so many different numbers.

What is the success rate for Xifaxan (rifaximin) for a permanent cure of SIBO after one use? I'm reading so many different numbers.

Maybe temporary fix: If U have ibs due to sibo (small intestinal bacterial overgrowth)--antibiotics like xifaxan (rifaximin) may help (is being studied 4 repeat use). Sibo may also occur from anatomic variations in the small bowel, altered small bowel motility, or a variety of systemic conditions that prevent permanent cure (e.g. The bacteria just grow back). Xifaxan (rifaximin) is also curative for C.difficile in appropriate dose & setting. ...Read more

Okay as twice a day.: A few questions: What makes taking the Xifacan three times a day difficult for you? How long have you been on the drug? Has a culture been done on your fences? What are the symptoms you're having? Have been on any other antibiotics for your SIBO? You can take Xifacan twice a day and assess the differences in symptoms. Diet is also very important. Ask WebMd re: diet ...Read more

I took Xifaxan (rifaximin) for SIBO. It's been a week and a half since I finished and my lower GI hurts more. I can't work. Could I have done permanent damage?

Probably not: Xifaxin can help with certain forms of IBS; your trial of treatment has not worked; this does not mean that you have experienced any permanent damage as a result; consult with your GI doc once more; perhaps try a higher dose of amitriptylline, or some other approach; ...Read more

How often can you take xifaxan (rifaximin). Can you take every six months for ibs?

Xifaxan (rifaximin) NOT for IBS: Ibs is a functional gastrointestinal disorder characterized by pain/cramping, altered bowel habits in the absence of specific/unique organic pathology/disease. Other symptoms common to ibs include bloating, gassiness, frequent/urge to have bm, early satiety, dyspepsia etc... Often = nuisances, but can be debilitating at times.. Antibiotics don't treat ibs. If u r concerned, consult doc.. Good luck. ...Read more

I have been prescribed rifaximin. According to the literature that I have read,I can take probiotics. When should I take the probiotics and how much?

I have been prescribed rifaximin. According to the literature that I have read,I can take probiotics. When should I take the probiotics and how much?

Probiotics are good!: You should take probiotics at least 2 hours before or after your antibiotic. Selecting probiotics is the more confusing part because of how many are out there! Chose one that has a wider variety of bacterial strains look for one that has at least 7-20 strains. Follow directions on the packaging as some may be once or twice daily. If antibiotics are short term, continue for at least 7 days after. ...Read more

Been treated for sibo with xifaxan (rifaximin). Still get gas everytime i eat no matter what i eat. What else could it be?

Feeling gassy...: Feeling full of "gas" may reflect malabsorption of food (like gluten, lactose), intake of poorly digested food, or choosing foods known to promote gas (beans, fizzy drinks). Sometimes its more complicated--a stomach emptying too slowly, bacterial overgrowth syndrome, delayed intestinal function, partial obstruction from any cause, infection, rectum problems, and pelvic pathology outside the gut. ...Read more

I am using rifaximin for IBS. I will use it for 2 weeks....550mg TID. Should i undergo sigmoidoscopy for confirmation of iBS?

No: IRRITABLE bowel syndrome - should not be treated with rifaximine. And you can't see it on sigmoidoscopy. It is a diagnosis of exclusion ( means nothing else was found). If you mean INFLAMMATORY bowel disease then colonoscopy may help to provide diagnosis. Then anti inflammatory drugs are needed, keeping rifaximine type rugs for acute episodes only. ...Read more

Sibo. Takin rifaximin. Wats my chances of a c diff infection from this med? I read it can. Then i read it can treat it. 550mg every 12hrs

What's going on?: Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth? A real diagnosis, or a pop self-diagnosis for your self-described tiredness? If the latter, i'd urge you to maintain a healthy skepticism but your experiment is basically safe. If you're going to do this, at least be alert to the warning of pseuomembranous colitis and get treated by an evidence-based practitioner if it happens. ...Read more
