Genetic Testing: I would consider getting the genetic testing beforecresortinglto the surgery.
Possibly: Without a history or physical exam, you are unlikely to get any meaningful information. I suggest you call your primary doctor or a general practitioner for an appointment. If you have pain or blood in your stool, or if there is dark black, marrowbone or tar colored stool, seek urgent or emergency care. Best of luck.
What defines Ribbon-like stools? Is it literally the thickness of a Ribbon (which is about an 1/8th of an inch)?
Ribbon Like Stools: Change in bowel habits refer to any change in texture, consistency, frequency or amount including ribbon/pencil like stools. The exact thickness of the stool is not so relevant as much as having a change in your normal bowel habits. Ribbon like stools may be a sign of something benign like irritable bowel or something more serious such as colon/rectal cancer. See a Proctologist for a Colonoscopy.
Stool is not exactly round. Maybe oval or flat-ish. But not ribbon like or anything. Not sure if this is new or if it has always been like this.
My stool was coming out long, flat & ribbon-like. But now it's coming out in much smaller flat pieces. Like shards. I also go about 3-5 times a day.
Bowel caliber/color: Any change in the shape or caliber or your stool deserves a GI evaluation.See 1 more doctor answer
Occasional flat (ribbon like) stool. No pain ever, once or twice every couple months I have a little blood on outside of the tip of stool. Nofamhistory
Muscle spasm: Occasional flat stools are usually a combination of soft stool and tight muscles. Consistently flat stools are of concern, especially if combined with needing to strain to pass stool or pain with passing stool. However, since you are having some bleeding an examination is indicated to make sure it is not something more important.
Need an exam: If you have pencil like stools you either have very very large hemorrhoids (which would be very obvious) or something more worrisome. You should find someone to look and examine you as well as possibly perform a colonoscopy. If you have hemorrhoids that big, they also need to be dealt with because you can become completely obstructed and not be able to pass stools!
No bm's for days;when bm comes, stool is hard at first, turns ribbon-like, then very soft, and then bright red blood. Many trips to toilet. Colonoscopy showed only benign polyp. What could cause this?
Do thin ribbon like stool mobements in case of colon cancer continue all the time or is it ab on and off thing?
Ribbon like: Stool which is INTERMITTENT are DUE TO SPASM of the lower bowel (old term ="spastic colon") now this is a part of the diagnosis of IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) which is a DIAGNOSIS of EXCLUSION (other GI problems MUST BE RULED OUT) SO STOP worrying about the "big C" and get yourself checked out by your PCP and at your age a COLONOSCOPY, may be recommended! Hope this is helpful Dr Z

See a doctor: Can't give sound medical advice for something like this without a real history. You should see a doctor.
Should I go to the hospital? I've been having digestive problems for about a year now (ribbon like stools, occasional blood, excess mucus, going to the bathroom immediately after eating anything) but last night, I had a sudden urge to have a bowl movement
If: If your stool contains large dark clots of blood, you need to be evaluated by a doctor. If the substance is blood, you may be experiencing a GI bleed. This can be serious. Please be seen at the hospital without delay.See 1 more doctor answer
Stool has a bit of an oval/sqeezed look. Tho not flat or ribbon or anything. It is possible my stool always looked like that and I just never looked.
Yes it is: Since we can't turn the clock back we will never know but you can observe and note if there are other changes that occur in the future.
