What are the symptoms of an abdominal tumor under rib?

What are the symptoms of an abdominal tumor under rib?

Tumor Sxs: Symptoms (Sxs) of an abdominal tumor are usually absent unless the tumor grows greatly in size. An abdominal tumor in the upper abdomen and deep to a rib would be unusual unless the patient had bulky disease (for example due to a primary liver tumor). A key issue here is the physical exam and if any question then imaging (radiology) studies to rule out the presence of a tumor.

Neoplasms (Definition)

"tumor" literally translates as "mass", so even a fresh bruise could be called a "tumor". Doctors use the term "neoplasm" (tranlates literally as new growth) to describe tumors that are abnormal growths of cells. These may be benign or malignant; "malignant" = cancer. In everyday usage, we use "tumor" ...Read more

I have double normal cortisol blood level, have burning pain under my ribs and on left side near umbilicus. Could these symptoms be of adrenal tumor?

I have double normal cortisol blood level, have burning pain under my ribs and on left side near umbilicus. Could these symptoms be of adrenal tumor?

Unlikely: Blood cortisol varies considerably throughout the day, so a single value does not mean much. A cortisol-producing adrenal tumor is rare. Pain from an adrenal tumor would more likely cause back pain, if it caused pain at all. See your doctor, but this is unlikely to be an adrenal tumor.

If one had symptoms of pancoast tumor. Would it have shown up on a chest xray.

If one had symptoms of pancoast tumor. Would it have shown up on a chest xray.

Pancoast tumor: It is a function of size. Small apical or pancoast tumors can be missed on x-rays but once their size becomes large, then a chest x-ray should be able to detect them.

I'm 42 non smoker have had chest discomfort. If your having symptoms of lung cancer would the tumor be big enough to be seen on a xray?

I'm 42 non smoker have had chest discomfort. If your having symptoms of lung cancer would the tumor be big enough to be seen on a xray?

The sensitivity: Of a chest xray for detecting lung cancer ranges from about 40-80% according to various studies. A chest x-ray is not sufficient to rule out lung cancer, sometimes even larger tumors can be masked due to their location next to normal structures. If lung Ca is a realistic concern, Chest CT is the study of choice.

Possibly: But small tumors can produce symptoms, and large tumors can sometimes be difficult to see on a chest xray, so a chest X-ray is not sufficient to exclude lung cancer. CT of the chest is much more sensitive.

Is chest pain a common symptom of lung cancer if cancer is causing pain how big would a tumor have to be and what is the likelihood of showing on xray?

Is chest pain a common symptom of lung cancer if cancer is causing pain how big would a tumor have to be and what is the likelihood of showing on xray?

Here is my guidance: Chest pain can be caused from many causes, lung cancer is not the first thing that should come to your mind. If the pain has been present for more than one week and your concern is cancer, a Chest X-ray will show it easily. But you should go see a doctor first in case your pain is persistent for >1 week..

What can cause a tumor under my left-upper rib?

What can cause a tumor under my left-upper rib?

Several lesions: If a lesion is palpable under the left rib cage the origin is most likely abdominal in origin ranging from an enlarged spleen to a palpable lesion of splenic flexure of colon. In addition several retroperitoneal masses such as the giant schwannoma and an extensive non functional pheo of left adrenal can be palpated. Left upper rib is covered by left clavicle.

I have a weird feeling on my right side of my rib. I am not sure what it could be. An air bubble or a tumor. Feeling behind the rib.

I have a weird feeling on my right side of my rib. I am not sure what it could be. An air bubble or a tumor. Feeling behind the rib.

Unlikely serious: Given your young age, assuming no recent trauma, I doubt that this is anything serious; certainly not an air bubble or cancerous tumor. It is possible you developed some focal irritation of the intercostal muscles between the ribs. Depending on the location, you might have developed floating rib syndrome. Try rest and ibuprofen or naproxen. See a clinician if your symptoms persist or worsen.

I have a hard bump on my rib cage I don't know if its a tumor because I have been having that bump seens I can remember but lately its been hurting?

I have a hard bump on my rib cage I don't know if its a tumor because I have been having that bump seens I can remember but lately its been hurting?

More info: Is it as hard as the bone? does it move above the bone or is it fixed to the rib? How long has it been there? There is more info that is needed. You should have an MD take a look. Most things that you would feel would be benign (NOT cancer) but it is hard to know without a biopsy.

How long can bone tumor in rib cage stay undetected.

How long can bone tumor in rib cage stay undetected.

Short time.: If lesion is benign such as bone cyst or benign cartilage tumor it may be unrecognized for many months. If malignant, the lesion will expand and produce pressure on rib periosteum which can cause significant pain, especially if it is metastatic.

Can focal nodular hyperplasia (benign liver tumor) cause pain in the right side under the rib?

Yes: If it is large enough and located in a site that would ordinary produce the pain. It can stretch the liver capsule which is quite sensitive. Gallstone disease is a more common cause of pain here and you'll probably want this ruled out; it tends to be colicky and less related to position.

My husband has what appears to be a benign tumor on his 8th and 9th rib pushing at his liver, 5-7cm. Is it best to remove w/part of the ribs?

My husband has what appears to be a benign tumor on his 8th and 9th rib pushing at his liver, 5-7cm. Is it best to remove w/part of the ribs?

It is a bit complex: I hope your husband has been to an oncologist and even have a second opinion as to what is the best approach to his tumor removal. First of all we must have a biosy and find out the correct diagnosis (even if it is benign)need to know what it is?). I would be very suspicious about any growth on the ribs & treat it as benign. So take him to a cancer center where they know how to manage bone tumors.

I feel something hard under my right rib cage when I lie flat. Feels big like an organ or possibly a bone, not round like a tumor. Gallbladder? Rib?

I feel something hard under my right rib cage when I lie flat. Feels big like an organ or possibly a bone, not round like a tumor. Gallbladder? Rib?

Maybe Liver: Liver may be palpable in very thin normal subjects with the edge of the liver just below the costal margin. It is soft and smooth and may be slightly tender. Note that on inspiration the liver moves down in the abdomen, and this may assist you in feeling the liver edge especially when the liver is enlarged. Sometimes the lower pole of the right kidney is just felt in normal subjects.

If sxs r new see PCP: If your back pain, rib cage pain and your ribs sticking out are all a recent occurrence, see your primary care physician (pcp) for an evaluation to determine the cause of this. However, anxiety can present with a lot of aches and pain especially if there is constant worry.
