Do muscles always heal ? Have had upper back muscle pain from overstretched rhomboids for around 18 months. Having physio for last year. Helps a bit.

What would cause a sudden muscle pain and tear type sound near the upper back, right under the shoulder blade. Would it be the rhomboid or trapezius?
Shoulder pain: 29 year old gentleman with sudden pain under the shoulder blade and audible tear. You need a full exam from an orthopaedic surgeon. If you mean the pain was underneath your scapula, the muscle underneath it is called the subscapularis. Tears involving this muscle or its tendon are detected using the lift off test. Likely sprain: The muscle is likely sprained since this muscle is rarely torn in sports. The only way to be sure would be to do an imaging study such as an MRI or a musculoskeletal ultrasound performed in office by many sports medicine physician . The other thing to be considered as causing your lingering pain would be an injury to your long thoracic nerve resulting in a subtle winging scapula.
