Retinyl Palmitate Vs Beta Carotene
My prenatal vitamin has 4000 IU retinyl palmitate and 4000 IU beta carotene. Is this too much RP to be taking?
Is 10, 000 iu vitamin a (as retinyl palmitate and 50% beta-carotene) too much for pregnant women? My bariatric multivitamin has that much. I'm worried.
Not too much:
Pregnant women should take about 4000-6000 units of vit a in pregnancy but you have been only taking 5000 iu, as beta-carotene is not vitamin a but a benign precursor. Too little vit a can be as serious a problem as too much. It sounds like your level is fine. See http://www. Care2.Com/greenliving/is-vitamin-a-safe-for-pregnant-women. Html

My vitamin supplement has 12, 500iu of vitamin a. With 10, 000iu beta-carotene and 2, 500iu palmitate. Is that a safe amount?
One can safely take very large amounts of beta carotene as it is non-toxic. One can suffer adverse consequences by taking more than 10, 000 iu of the palmitate form a day though toxicity is rare unless one ingests at least 25, 000 iu. Day for several months so 2, 500 iu is quite safe.

Maybe: Please forgive this senior physician's frankness. The data on carotenes and lycopenes is so massive, so contradictory, is so tied up with the politics of "healthy diet", and makes so little sense scientifically that your question cannot be answered. In science, the stuff that's really true is generally established quickly. I love eating carrots, but would not spend money supplementing carotene. ...Read more

If you have an excess of vitamin a stored in your liver, what happens when you eat beta carotene?
Probably very little: An excess of beta carotene gives you a bright yellow skin called carotenemia, often mistaken for jaundice. This probably means that there is a natural mechanism that stops the oxidation of beta carotene to make vit a if it is not needed. ...Read more
