Retaining Water Swollen Ankles
My dad has severe water retention with swollen ankles and legs. He was just diagnosed with lung cancer. How can he be helped with the endema?
My partner foot is red & swollen with purple patches, yes he had water retention about 2 yrs. No it's not going up the leg like cellulitis. Any idea?
Clotting?: It sounds as if your partner needs appropriate compression garments to reduce edema and swelling but this is best for venous stasis and not necessarily for arterial insufficency. A few things: Excess dietary sodium can cause fluid retention, which can explain swelling in the foot, ankles and legs. Prolonged sitting or standing in place may cause swelling. Depends on cause: Swelling of both ankles is due to a variety of diseases including heart failure, low blood proteins, liver failure, pregnancy and other systemic diseases. Bilities, including rheumatoid arthritis due to the bilateral involvement of multiple joints; other types of arthritis. Sometimes viral infections can cause multiple joint swellings/pain.
Need to see pcp for onward referral to a rheumatologist, who can diagnose/treat such conditions.
You needs xrays, labs and likely joint fluid to help aspiration to DX or rule out other diagnoses.

Need more info...: Is ankle swelling bilaterally symmetrical, involving evenly or locally/ regionally? Do you have short of breath? Have you had history of congestive heart failure...?
