How common is cervical cancer for a 25 year old who has never had a pap smear? I have engaged in sexual activity but have not had intercourse.

Uncommon: Most cervical cancers are due to infection with a virus, human papiloma virus (hpv) which is usually acquired through sexual intercourse. Oral sex can transmit hpv and using condom is not protective either. You are too young to have cervical cancer, but i would strongly urge you to seek care for preventive services, including hpv vaccine, though you may have missed the recommended age for vaccine. ...Read more

I had an abnormal pap smear low grade. Does this mean cancer?

Not cancer: If your pap smear shows LSIL, which stands for low-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion, most doctors will not do anything immediately. You will probably be asked to come back in six months for another pap smear to see if the lesions are still present. In many cases, the lesions disappear over time and there are no further problems.
