Meningitis: It doesn't look like it is bacterial meningitis as the # of WBC is only 28. Fungal, tuberculosis, viral meningitis are possible. A culture should have been set up to find the causative infection. Based on the ct, there appears to be changes, but again, not pointing to what infection is involved. Hard to say: The scan retort doesn't sound as bad as it could be. Encephalitis can have devastating effects and can take a long time to recover. Some people have long term damage. Your friend will probably take weeks, or longer, to get over this. ...Read more

URL for Neuro or ID: Viral, fungal or tuberculin are likely and less likely bacteria. Your friend still needs a diagnosis. Mri brain and eeg are recommended as both can show certain patterns in japanse encephaliits. Serological and nucleaic acid testing for the viral and other potential bugs should be undertaken. JE: Japanese encephalitis can affect the brain tissue and cause edema. The edema should regress but the affected brain may never return to baseline. See your neurologist for deeper explanations. An MRI can show you what is left to work with after encephalitis has taken its toll. ...Read more

NOT PREDICTABLE: Arthopod borne encephalitis can be very difficult to treat, and there is potential brain injury which can be permanent. Assuming good outcome, likely about 6-9 months to return to level of prior functioning. Suggest a conference with the treatment team, plans for rehab, and their opinion regarding prognosis.
