Not much to tell: Patients do very well without a gallbladder. In our culture it serves little purpose, and is certainly not vital.About 10% of my male patients and 33% of my female patients can have temporary urgency, a vigorous need to have a bm about 30-45 minutes after a meal . But, surgery to remove abnormal gallbladders can relieve painful problems from gallstones usually with little or no intestinal side effects. No. : Hi, in the first few weeks after a gall bladder removal a few pts may get some diarrhea but this resolves soon. Over time most patients who have had their gall bladder removed for the appropriate reasons have no trouble whatsoever and lead a normal life. Hope this helps. ...Read more

Fairly rare: The vast majority of those undergoing cholecystectomy (removal of the gallbladder) do not experience any of the things you mention. Occasionally people have trouble digesting very fatty meals but that is not good for you anyway and can be managed by a moderately low fat diet. There is no truth to the stories about chronic diarrhea or food intolerance. Pain s/p gallbladder: Can be retained stone-, scarring, biliary ( bile duct )dyskinesia, or adhesions ( adhesions- sticking of surfaces after surgery is hard to detect except visually at laproscopy) , check lipase for pancreas effects and for h pylori a stomach bacteria that may be complicating the picture.
